London - Territorial or Transport Links

Postby Pardre on Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:01 pm

I'd love to see (and help design) a London Map.

Territorially, it could be within the M25, or the North and South Circulars. Alternatively, it could just be the counties of Greater London, but i can't really see a way of dividing them up into 'continents' very easily.

Transport Links - The Underground map strikes me as the most obvious one to work on, with lines and/or geographical regions being continents. For a bigger map, perhaps the larger map that TfL publish that extends to areas outside London itself, (eg. Slough).
Alternate maps could consist of a simplified Tube map, with arterial rail, road and boat services.

A wider UK rail network based on regions and train line operators would also be great to see!

I would be more than happy to help design such maps, but as a total beginner, I would need some assistance along the way...

A London map would be cool.
I think a transport one would be problematic, mainly because you couldn't easily decide which "continent" a "territory" belonged to (Waterloo is on the Northern, Bakerloo, and Jubilee lines e.g.)

But a map with famous London landmarks and areas would be sweet.

I might try and do some graphics, but haven't got a clue with the technical part of coding it (I'm sure I could learn though, as I am a techie!)

For the underground, it would be a *lot* of territories, but seeing as there's one for Mexico City, i'm sure it could also be adapted for the underground. There's the issue of copyright, but with Boris in charge, i'm sure they'd say yes. <_<

Wouldn't it be much like the USA Rail/Europe Rail maps, with crossovers being split into parts? eg Waterloo.

As for the london boroughs, as a native to London i'd love that, plus would be simple, surely? Maybe split some into constituencies?

I think one with areas and also famous landmarks would be cool.

What's the first thing to do? Sketch a rough draft of the map and post it here? Might try and do that this weekend.

Cheers.

Hi,
I was thinking of sketching a similar thing. CC really needs a London map!

I havent got the time to design the whole thing but am happy to chuck in some ideas - as a native londoner and/or bounce idea of each other.

I wouldnt go for a transport one, its a bit boring and ugly and has been done well elsewhere. London isnt just a transport network its so much more!! I think we should play London to it's strenths and major on the names and locations - so it can connect with non Londoners. I think a literal approach is fine (like NYC or Sydney) but maybe we could add some character to it?

A few ideas:
1. Keep the size to Zone 1 & 2. Reason: London's fun is in the history and detail, not it's size. I'd rather attack Oxford street than Havering borough if you know what i mean.

2. Royal Parks - make them a bonus. Hold 2 = x armies, Hold all = x armies. Can attack each other?

3. Bridges - we have loads of them, make them a bonus too in the same way.

4. Tube, call it a tube not underground. The Yanks love all that quaint stuff :)

5. Tube network. avoid anything complicated, NYC map has the right idea. maybe have 6 lines with interesting stations. So Oxford street yes, Barbican no etc..

6. Choose historial/interesting names for areas over literal. So "Tower of London" instead of "South City of London" etc..

7. Have bonus areas like:

West End: Soho, Theatreland, Covent Garden, Carnaby Street, Oxford Street
Midtown: Holborn, Kingsway, Fleet Street, Strand
North: Angel, Highbury, Barnsbury, Finsbury Park
Southbank: Elephant, Bankside, Southwark, Waterloo
City: Bank, Tower, Farringdon, Bishopgate, Moorgate
East: Hoxton, Hackney, Whitechapel, Isle of Dogs etc..
Westminster: Palace, Parliament, Hyde Park, Marble Arch etc..

8. Extra points for holding Tourist sites: Houses of Parliament, Downing street, Buck Palace, Nelson Column etc..

9. Austin Powers theme? Oh baby!

thats it for now
if there are any Non Londoners that are happy to design with my input let me know.
cheers!

Great ideas there CeleryUK. I'll see if I have some time over the next few days to sketch a rough map.
