Well, no. The iron mask was a true prisoner of Louis XIV I think, but Dumas invented the story of that mysterious prisonner.
There are some small islands in fron of Marseilles, with one of them holding a renaissance alcatraz, called "le chateau d'if". I know he was held prisonner there for some time. It s said it was some kind of noble man. Maybe the Marquis de Sade, who wrote stuff that went beyond pornography?

DeSade was almost a hundred years later. The masked prisoner may have been the commoner lover of Louis the XIV's mother... and also Louis' real father...
Also, the mask was actually velvet.

there are dozens of theories about him, no one knows and no one will ever know. Louis XV was the last king to know the secret. Louis XVI and Napoleon asked for some investigations to know who he was and never got the answer.
