His whole motivation was that he thought blitz wasn't a very good player and didn't deserve to be on top. Blitz had refused to play him, but duggie was determined to get a game against him.

Dude, this guy just got stabbed about 50 times, dizembowelled and beheaded while riding a greyhound bus...

This really doesn't have anything to do with greyhound. As much as some like to pretend that it isn't the case, there are people that take pleasure in hurting others and will do so regardless of how it will negatively impact their own life and it is impossible to predict where you will run into these people. In my area there was a huge uproar about how some kid snuck into his "friends" house and stabbed to death the friend, the friend's father and the mother. He said he would have raped and killed the sister too had she not escaped. The reason he gave for doing it was simply because he wanted to know what it feels like to kill another person and he promised the judge that if he ever gets out he'll do it again.

My advice to you is to keep your guns loaded and in your dresser drawer and to not fall asleep next to strangers on the bus. If you're a pacifist and you don't want to listen to me that's your decision but the harsh truth of reality is that you may end up dead if you don't.

OH YES BECAUSE SURELY THIS INCIDENT IS REASON ENOUGH TO CARRY A GUN WITH YOU 24/7!

Seriously, if your reason for keeping a gun is psychopaths existing then I feel bad for you.

I also wonder what would happen if that kid sneaking into the house found your loaded firearm in the dresser drawer.

Duane: You know what they say about love and war.
Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

I do consider reducing the risk of my death one of many good reasons to own a gun. If you don't believe that self defense is a good reason to bear arms, a constitutional right which is equal to freedom of speech and freedom of religion, then you don't have to own one but you may die because of that decision.

As to your question regarding what would have happened if the kid who broke in and murdered his friend's family had found a gun the answer is that the family may have been shot to death rather than stabbed to death. There is also the distinct and more likely possibility that the entire family would have survived.

If your reason for carrying a gun is the highly unlikely possibility that you might get knifed and decapitated while sleeping on mass transit, then you should really never ever drive a car again.

You're a lot more likely to get decapitated while driving a car than by a random psychopath.

However, I also completely understand your reasoning GabonX and sympathize completely with the fear from which it stems. As I was reading the article, I couldn't help but think, "Damn, I gotta get a concealed carry license and a four pounder. Ain't gonna let no trip ass punk catch me slippin."

At the same time though, Snorri makes the better point. You really are more likely to have your own weapon used against you, or invite more trouble (from different sources) than you ever would have without one.

The statistics and studies on these unfortunate realities are out there, but I can't remember where I saw them at the moment (not from the NRA, of course). It was from some government agency study, about the probability of death in the USA. I remember reading it after Hurricane Katrina, and noting that death by drowning was unrealistically high for projecting that probability in any year other than 2005.

If I think of it, I'll post a link here.

The reason that I would carry a weapon isn't solely because I'm afraid of any one possible circumstance, but rather that there are infinite circumstances where carrying a weapon could save my life.

I disagree with the statement that I would be more likely to have my own weapon used against me than to have it save my life. This may be true for people who are not psychologically conditioned to use a weapon to kill another human being but the opposite is true for people who are and I consider myself to be capable of extreme feats of aggression when put in a possible life and death situation. Also, if a person shows off their weapon or acts arrogant while holding one you are correct that they are inviting trouble. A person should be mild mannered and keep such things concealed on their body, in other words.. "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
