Art of War

Postby TheMissionary on Sun Sep 06, 2009 9:55 am

Ok i don't know if this part of the forum is strictly for game questions but i have a simple question i'm trying to get feedback on.

For Sun Tzu's Book "The Art Of War", does anyone know which translation is best to buy? I went to Barnes and Noble and found about seven different translations.

Thanks to any help.

Mainly because I don't want to sit on my computer to read it. I'll have it on the go for those times when there is plenty of time to kill and i'm not at home.

If you see a translation by Thomas Cleary then that would be the one I would recommend. I don't have his translation of The Art of War, but I have several other Eastern Philosophy text that he translated and his work is excellent.

I've got Samuel Griffith's translation, and I think it's pretty good. I've heard that Roger Ames' version is one of the best though. I've not read it, so I can't say for sure, but it seems fairly standard nowadays, especially if you're looking for closeness to the original.

Amazon

Just avoid any of that "The Art of War for..." crap. You don't need "The Art of War for Executives", for example.

If you want to look at further stuff, I recommend The Book of the Five Rings for the more eastern philosophical side, and Von Clausewitz's "On War" for a more in depth study.

Hope this helps.

This may not be the answer you looking for, but consider looking at multiple translations.

The wisdom of that book is great enough that you may read the same passage written two different ways and gain insight from each of them.
