I really think you guys that get offended over the spelling of the name are over reacting. The letter "d" is often replaced with a "t" (conversely it may be the other way around) in the American language versus a foreign language. For example, in my last name there is a letter "t" in the German spelling, but when my grandfather came to America, the spelling changed from a "t" to a "d". I am in no way offended by that change...and it is in my family NAME!

Likewise, one shouldn't find offense in someone who may spell the nickname for Saint Patrick as "Patty"...there is, however, a letter "t" in the name Patrick after all. And in no way does anyone mean to be calling St Patrick a girl! Really? That's why you are offended? Because in your own twisted mind you happen to see your patron saint as a female? It's not mine or any Americans' problem that YOU THINK THAT WAY. I can tell you that the use of the term "Patty" does not conjure up feminine images of Ireland's most venerated patron Saint. We all know what the images of St. Patrick look like...why would anybody think that St. Patrick was a woman if someone SPELLED THE NAME as St. Patty? Why would YOU think that?

This is Saint Patrick:

This is an image I get when I type in St. Patty:

I am guessing the pronunciation between Paddy and Patty are similarly phonetic in nature, and in Gaelic, the pronunciation of the letter "d" is sharper than it's American counterpart; therefore, making more of a "t" sound than a "d" sound. Similarly, there often are subsequent translation misspellings of letters of the "B", "P", and "V" sounds when written.

So, if indeed you find the written "Patty" offensive; I do humbly apologize! It was ignorance on my part (even though I have Irish blood in my veins) and perhaps this thread was a lesson to myself and others. I will change the spelling of the thread...and I hope you all had a super St. Paddy's Day!

CW has a point. In my native country my legal first name is "Karlheinz", however, here in US they spell and pronounce it "Tonya."
