Seems legal enough. They fired warning shots, the boat kept approaching, so they fired on the boat.

I'm not sure how much time should be granted in between warning shots and "fatal" shots, but... what those security guys did seemed legal and reasonable, given the situation.

I thought cargo ships weren't permitted to be armed. I agree their response seems perfectly reasonable.

I think it depends on their contract with the insurance companies. I've heard that most of those companies don't allow the ships to be armed, I guess because it's cheaper for them to pay the pirates, instead of running the risk of murdering people, or getting people on the ship killed in a messy incident.
