Work Week for Parents

Postby saxitoxin on Fri Apr 27, 2012 1:08 pm

Swedish mothers of small children work a lot more now than in the 1970s. This is an important reason why so many parents feel extremely pressured for time. One way to handle the stress is to take advantage of the right for Swedish parents to work half time, according to a new doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg.

The author of the thesis Jörgen Larsson suggests shorter workweeks for parents.

We currently have a surplus of people on the planet, increasing the penalties for unprotected sex will help bring the population more in-check and save the environment. I say punitively increase the work week for people with children to 45 hours.

Currently, the US population is 330 million and the GDP is about $15 trillion.

If we eliminate half of the US population, the GDP per capita income would double!

MALTHUS FTW (but not really).

I'm all for lowering the work week for parents, as long as they are paid hourly and not salaried. If you don't like working long hours and taking care of your kids, either don't have kids or don't work. Otherwise, suck it up, cupcake!

lol.....Damn near every job I know (or have had or that anyone I know has) doesn't have anything to do with the old 40 hour adage; in the winter my bride works 25 - 40 or so a week and in the summer she works at least 80. Lucky enough to have a good job? You do what it requires to keep it......

My brother's regular week is about 80......I could go on :D

I say you have to get a permit to have kids (or say more than 2) and some outrageous penalty for screwing up....like castration or public flogging (repeatedly)....that'd be cool.....

Under the proposal from the guy in Sweden, the maximum regular time would be lowered from 40 to 35, meaning a parent who worked hours 36-40 would be paid whatever the overtime rate happens to be in Sweden, whereas people without children would be paid regular rate in hours 36-40. Also, the state would officially encourage employers to give their childrened employees those 5 hours per week off and, if they took them, the state would directly pay the difference in earnings to the employee.

I think the GDP is down to 13.8 trillion. also related, GDP from last quarter is 2.2%. down from 3.0% last time. Expect the 2.2 to be re-adjusted downwards on the back page of NY times next week. If GDP falls again this quarter, Obama will have his double dip recession that going trillions more into debt was supposed to prevent.

We'll see

Regarding overtime, unfortunately most real jobs are salaried so that doesn't apply...at least here. We're obviously not as advanced as the Skandahoovians

For purposes of this thread, assume we're talking about the counter staff at Arby's.
