Yes it is. Making generalizations based on race is always bigoted, no matter if the generalizations are positive or negative. Because by doing that you reduce an entire group of people into nothing but stereotypes. Furthermore, asserting that "black people are better at basketball" furthers the stereotype that black people are less "advanced" and more "savage" than white people.

In Mexico and in general in Latin America we call people of African descent "Negro" (Black). And they don't seem to bother, we treat them like equals because they are equal. If we want to say they might be better for hunting at night because they won't be seen by rabits we say it and we are not being racists.

Um, yes you are actually. You are being racists.

Um, how about no? Nice going blaming systematic discrimination on the victims.

Face it nietzscszsche, you're a racist. Admitting the problem is the first step towards recovery.

Seriously, when did point out facts, or generalizations with a lot of truth in them became bigotry.

For instance, is it bigoted to say that African Americans (I hope I'm not being racist, I don't understand anymore) are better at basketball than Anglosaxons?

But I bet that if it was something with a slightly bad connotation it would be bigoted.

I'm always worried that my comments might be racist, seriously, American and their sensitivities. In Mexico and in general in Latin America we call people of African descent "Negro" (Black). And they don't seem to bother, we treat them like equals because they are equal. If we want to say they might be better for hunting at night because they won't be seen by rabits we say it and we are not being racists.

Maybe racism affects those discriminated against because society teaches them too much sensitivity in these topics?

Say stuff as you see it, without malice, and you will be ok, that should be the rule.

You're okay, nietz, and your comments are fine. Some people see bigotry and racism whenever it is not occurring. They stand on their podiums and condemn that which they don't understand. It's from a state of mind that is very likely to be prevalent in areas where the denizens aren't frequently exposed to people who are different from their "in-group." Or, because they're oversensitive, they don't get it, etc.

If by racist you mean believing that different races have different characteristics, then I'm racist.

All of these quotes are from the website of British official state media "BBC", in a section in which the BBC - in its role as a self-described "national cultural treasure" - teaches Britons about foreign cultures. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/italian/ ... alth.shtml)

While these examples would become subjects of outrage if put out by any other institution, it is "BBC" itself - through a near-monopoly on broadcast media - that determines which subjects become subjects of outrage and which do not.

The role of all official state media in the west is, first, to convince the natives things are going very well. This is a way of maintaining social stability during times of national stress and is accomplished through pseudo-monopolies in foreign news reporting through which foreign cultures and nations are subtly portrayed as slightly less capable - or a bit more neurotic - than the native culture.
