CC Classic Film Battle No.1 TGE v TMS

Postby Pedronicus on Fri May 25, 2012 6:38 pm

Ok. I'm sick to death of American political threads, so I thought we could have a best film discussion about two films starring Steve McQueen

The Great Escape
v
The Magnificent Seven.

Which one is better and why?

How many times did Steve McQueen jump over a fence on a motorcycle in "The Magnificent Seven?"

TMS does win points for being a badass Clash cut off "Sandinista."

Never saw Magnificent Seven and have seen (and whistled the theme of) The Great Escape many times. Therefore...

Need to rewatch TGE. Remember not liking TMS that much because Kurosawa > anyone who tries to be him.

This is a difficult one for me. I love both Great Escape and Magnificent Seven. I went with Great Escape because I've seen it more times than Magnificent Seven. And yes, that's really the only reason.

The Great Escape, hands down.

TMS was based on Seven Samurai, which beat the crap outta TMS, so TGE must be better.

Normally, I'd agree. But I'd have to make an exception for TMS. So, sure, I'd dock a few points for being an Americanized remake, but c'mon.

Other than that I can't really decide between the two. If forced, I'd probably say The Magnificent Seven mainly because I generally like westerns more than war/escape movies.

Also:

Steve McQueen, Steve McQueen, the coolest goddamn mothefucker on the silver screen

As the story goes, Yul Brynner was pissed off of McQueen during filming of the TMS. Brynner would claim McQueen was scene stealing every time he had a speaking part with the two of them in it. McQueen would tip his hat or make some sort of gesture to get attention. Love both movies but I could watch TMS all the time.

I should point out that I saw Seven Samurai first, and watched TMS BECAUSE I liked Seven Samurai. That certainly clouds my perspective.

Love TMS.
Guys if you haven't watched it, you have to.
Worth it for the score alone.

TGE - dull war movie.
