Anyone into blacksmithing and knife making?

I'm not much into blacksmithing or actually making knives and swords, but I do love to collect them. I would actually like some advice on how to take rust off without wrecking the shine or the blade... What would any of you recommend using as blade polish? Would car polish or wax work well, or should it be some sort of other polish? What do you polish them with?

I was told to use Scotch Guard to remove rust without removing patina, but I haven't tried it yet either.
