In the play it comes from, the guy is a radio evangelist from the Southern States. I don't think "Beverley" is that unlikely a name there.
We changed it, because a part of the idea of the monologue was to engage with your audience. If we'd kept teh "radio" setting, he'd have been talking to empty air.
As to why he became Irish, well, I tried it one day and it just sounded better.
