Misinformative titles.

Postby AAFitz on Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:52 am

I cant help laugh when reading a thread title, and then going on to read that the author has completely made the wrong assumptions about the facts presented that supposedly support it.

For example:
http://www.weather.com/weather/videos/n ... /169/28922

I wouldn't say I was laughing per-se at this one, but certainly questioning the author of the title.

Now, while its clear, the driver was quick enough not to drive over the baby carriage, that hardly is a heroic deed per se, and one that is required by law, and reasonable one required of all drivers, especially professional ones.

Further, it isn't fully clear if he called to the woman that actually saved the carriage from pulling an "Untouchables" (a stolen scene by the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lk75ycH ... re=related) which definitely makes him more heroic, but it does seem to me that the woman actually saved the baby, and quite probably actually saved it from injury. She got there quick and stopped it, and thank god nothing happened. The Garbage truck driver, made a heroic, quick thinking move, and absolutely should be applauded, but, in the end, giving him the full save as the title suggest, is certainly at least a little misleading.

Again, I am not commenting on the actions of anyone here, except the author of the title. Its a great story, and it was awesome to see a couple of people save a baby from a truly dangerous situation to say the least.

However, naming an article to suit your take on it, or sell more copies, or get more views will never change the actual facts of the story, and in the end, will just make you look like a fool, because while you may think we are all fooled by your clever title...most, will not be,
which is why I didn't title this:

Thread titles are always wrong
The OP can never be trusted
Or dont believe anything you read.

Sure, I could make that summation after this one example, but, unlike many, are actually interested in the truth.
I'm Spanking Monkey now....err...I mean I'm a Spanking Monkey now...that shoots milk
Too much. I know.

There was an article (I don't remember where from) where the headline was "Governor Walker Uses Tax Dollars to Campaign." This seems to indicate that Governor Walker, famous for wanting to cut benefits to government employees to save Wisconsin's budget, was spending taxes on his own campaign. The content of the article was that Governor Walker was using in speeches the idea that he created jobs by giving tax breaks to companies for creating jobs. Definitively misleading.

This is not exactly misinformative, but it also shows how fucked up the news agencies are:

This might not be a serious newspaper, I don't know, but the same news was in a Mexican supposedly serious newspaper, and I see this kind of feature news every day.

The media use racy headlines to generate a higher level of interest in their articles/newspapers, even if the headline is slightly tenuous?
