No, because the second begins very much with the first. You only gas people you no longer consider truly human. First, you have to make them lesser.... and systematic ridicule, abuse is how that happens.

Remember, very few Germans were actively involved in the gassing. Many claimed to not really know and to have been appalled at the result. Yet, it happened precisely because so few people were willing to step up and say "this is just wrong" when the abuses were far less.

I think of pictures of both old American Indians, Jews in Europe.. other members of oppressed groups standing tall and walking through insults, garbage being thrown, etc. Repeatedly these always represent pictures of pride and honor. The dishonor is to those who hurl the insults.

thus, there's the argument of the beard. At what point does bigotry become bannable? Personally, I think that either all of it is ok or none of it is, and, well, since the latter is just extremely boring, I think there shouldn't be any bans for bigotry. Without a mechanism like that and no mods, the forum becomes extremely vulnerable to both spammers and invasions from other forums.
However, with a mechanism like that, there is the risk that the forum will devolve into a circlejerk where any dissenting oppinion is immediately downvoted to hell.

It's a tricky situation.

I also clicked through to the "olympian receives death threats via twitter" story and found that nearly every example they quoted was along the lines of "I hope you die" but nobody actually got even close to saying "I am going to kill you". The ones that didn't say "I hope you die" were mostly just angry expletives along the lines of "f*ck you!" Now I'm not saying that any of those tweets were pleasent, and I wouldn't send one like that myself, but they certainly weren't death threats. Just expressions of extreme disgust.
