Objectivism

Postby nietzsche on Sun Oct 14, 2012 4:21 pm

Ok, apparently we have a few members who are either knowledgeable or interested in objectivism.

I've read a bit about it, I'm not claiming to fully understand it's scope and implications because I've haven't read/pondered enough.

As I was reading one author, I felt I was in familiar territory, yet couldn't understand why. The concepts were helpful and to be honest I even came to a realization of something that had happened earlier in my life that I didn't know thanks to some explanation by author.

However, as I kept reading, I started to feel some rejection for it. I didn't know why, suddenly it hit me, is as if I was reading Nietzsche all over again, intoxicating, exhilarating yet dangerous.

Is individualism the goal? (in life)

What is then the value of the cultures of the past, with all their anxious numbing rituals?

Introspection, self-understanding, I guess are good ideas, but where do we go from them?

Please, share your thoughts.

Because it didn't say "for non-Americans"

answering as i think an objectivist would answer:

- yes, not only is individualism the goal, but self-interest should be the motivator behind all actions.

- any unreasonable rituals are worthless and should be discarded.

- see the first answer

this thread is kind of vague, which is probably why people didn't respond

I know.

It's just that I don't have 1 specific question about objectivism.

I expected the discussion to evolve on what others know about objectivism. Big hopes I guess.

Maybe I was to harsh on Scotty and posters who know about the topic think I was laughing about the book and the philosophy, when I was laughing at his trying to quietly introduce a lie and leave it there as if it was a fact.
