Mock Vote: UN Security Council elections 2012

Postby saxitoxin on Thu Oct 18, 2012 12:37 pm

Elected Yesterday: Argentina, Rwanda, Australia
Continuing: United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China, France, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Togo, Morocco, Guatemala

There are two seats remaining to be elected, "Asia-Pacific" and "Western Europe and Others."

You can cast one vote for FINLAND or LUXEMBOURG.

You can cast a second vote for CAMBODIA or BHUTAN or SOUTH KOREA.

Gotta keep South Korea in there. Its pro-US rubber stamps are needed!

But Cambodia may be more pliant. The US did, after all, 'help' their main man overcome the Evil Commies and turn Cambodia into a 'democracy' dominated by his friends and family.

Well that was fast ...

Luxembourg beats Finland with 131 of 193 votes
South Korea beats Cambodia and Bhutan with 149 of 193 votes

http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?N ... IBOHoaHeSo

Best possible outcome for the US, IMO, worst possible outcome for Russia/China.

Hey-OHH!!!

South Korea FTW!

I didn't know if Finland or Luxembourg was the better pick for the US/NATO. Luxembourg makes sense though (more decades of commitment and support to US interests).

I find it amusing that the "world government ideal" (UN) can be so dominated by the US and to a lesser degree, its NATO boy-toys.

It also bears noting that Rwanda was elected to the Security Council despite the fact the defense minister is moonlighting as the head of a rebel militia in the Congo.

Meanwhile, two years ago ...

A leaked United Nations report documenting Rwandan atrocities that “could be classified as crimes of genocide” in the eastern Congo has created a political crisis that threatens to disrupt Washington’s plans to dominate the continent. Rwanda’s minority Tutsi regime – an American client that acts as a mercenary for U.S. interests in Africa, along with Uganda – threatens to withdraw its soldiers from United Nations “peace-keeping” missions if the report is not suppressed.

I guess they were right about everything except the "disrupt Washington's plans" bit.

Eh, it happens, but most of the time it's worth the intervention.
