Microsoft reverses it's used game policy

Postby patches70 on Wed Jun 19, 2013 5:18 pm

Xbox one games were planned to have a code when purchased that once the code was input that game would play on that console only. You wouldn't be able to loan it to your buddy to play on his console as it wouldn't work. When trading in that game the gamestore could get a reset code from Xbox (for a significant fee) to reset the code so the game could be sold as a used game. With this extra fee used games would increase in price to practically the same as a new game.

Outcry from gamers was swift and angry as were retailers like Gamestop where their entire used game business would have gone up in smoke with this user code proposed.

Today microsoft has announced that Xbox one games will not have such a code and will function just like Xbox 360 games do now.
Also, Xbox one was also supposed to be only able to be played while connected to the internet. The console had to be connected to use. This also has been reversed, though one will require an internet connection upon initial set up of the console, but after that games can be played online or offline, just like Xbox 360. This includes downloaded games as well.

So, in summation, all the crappy new microsoft DRM's for Xbox one have been removed. This is the biggest backtrack in gaming history.

Just saw that myself. Basically, the Xbox One will function much as the 360 did in regards to gaming, which is just fine by me. And here's the link too.

I theorize that video game makers attempted to have Microsoft implement the original policy.

Surely some of the biggest probably. Sony was smart not to bite on it, since it is bad PR (and bad policy from a user and potential customer pov).

Sure, why not? And customer demand reined them in.
