Seed oil versus Beef.

Postby 2dimes on Tue Mar 28, 2023 8:51 am

Dukasaur brought up something I had not fully considered, though I had thought about it a little bit.

BigToughRalf figures the cows are going to ruin his golf courses.

What are your thoughts?

Damnit, I misread your poll title. Can you please turn on re-voting?

Eating beef is actually worse for the environment than driving a car and really ought to be classified as a capital offence.

Rape is the British (and possibly Candian) name for Canola. This may or may not be relevant.

Particularly in light of the thing in Nashville. I feel bad now. Though it's not new, there were a few variations of this sort of thing in flame wars. Maybe it was a different time.

Kind of. Canola is a rapeseed from Canada modified in the 1970s to change some of the fatty acids.

The plan was to make a healthy new thing. Duk's recently posted video features an Aussie doctor who suggests, like this thread, they might have failed.

Yeah the fields are certainly beautiful when the [name omitted] is almost ready for harvest, to be made into potentially toxic food stuffs.

That's not good. What about the oil? I feel like it's almost everywhere.

Yeah, it's funny. We took a vacation out west in 2002. In Saskatchewan, I stopped to take pictures of a sunrise over a field of Canola. It was just beautiful. A local stopped and asked if we were alright. I told him I was just taking some pictures because it was such an amazing sight. He shook his head and walked back to his car. He didn't say anything else, but I could imagine him thinking, "idiot tourists" as he walked away.

We were out for a drive in the country just South of Vulcan Alberta, can't remember the year but more than a decade ago. I wanted to check out one of the old British Commonwealth Air Training Plan hangars that was for sale for around $80,000. Unfortunately the roof had not been taken care of so it probably needed well over $100,000 in repairs just to support new tar and gravel. At the time that was way over our budget. Took a detour for a couple of miles east of the airfield. Driving up one road we met up with a truck load of Hutterites who stopped, being in their neighborhood, to be polite, I stopped and rolled down the window. The driver asked, "Are you lost?" I said, "No, we're just enjoying a drive around because it's so nice out here." Poor guys left thinking "Weirdo city folks." Partially right I suppose.

Most of the actual baby boomers never switched to calling the crop Canola, even though by the 1980s it was almost certainly the new variety.

I volunteered to go with the one of our offspring's school trips to Aggi Days. It's a chance for city kids including mine to see a live cow, horse, pig, sheep, food crops and some hay bales. The Canola commission had their display set up. I earnestly asked about the differences between it and the older stuff to be told quite boldly, "Well for one thing, rape is poisonous!"

I found that quite interesting, since I knew Canola was a somewhat modern development and though not as common before margarine became popular, some farmers had grown rape before the new strain. My dad was amused to hear the tale.

I've never heard the term canola before. Over here it's still rape and rapeseed oil, although people often refer to the plant as rapeseed too (it's the safer option with people like KB hanging around).

I remember going to big a dinner in China and being asked quite loudly 'do you like rape?'. I wasn't sure how to respond at first, until I realised the asker was referring to a plate of vegetables on the table.

I doubt the country folk were judging you. As someone who grew up in the country the yellow fields look nice to country people too. They also smell way nicer than animal farms and don't tend to be fertilized with manure, which makes you doubly appreciative of them. Sounds like you just met some people who were at the more sour end of the scale.

You should check out Saskatchewan or in the US Montana or Wyoming. There are places where you can drive for many miles and never see any people.

Unless it's a feed lot, cattle are spread out enough here you can walk in their pastures without it smelling bad.

Of course we pulled over to take a walk one time and my dog found some cow pies, he promptly rolled in them. He had to ride in the back of the vehicle over to a lake for a rinse. My wife was grouchy.
