And what about a mother who sleeps with her 8 years old son?

I bet that kid is the healthiest one in his health region. Dude must not be getting much of a feeding out of it though.

My wife has breastfed all of our kids, doing it much later than most people find "normal". For instance with our third, she bf him until he was around 2. She stopped then, because it was just too weird. 3 years old is just too old, we both agree on that.

When I was growing up, we had a French friend (like born in France then moved to US). Her son was probably about 5 and he still bf, that was just odd.

My cousins husband was breastfed until he was in kindergarten. His mom used to come up to the school to feed him during recess, but soon stopped after the backlash. He was at least 5 to 6 years old!!!!

He was the youngest out of 5 kids, and I don't know how long she fed the others. ;)

My cousin and him would fight over breastfeeding their 3 kids, and she won by stopping after 1 year.

It is normal in other cultures to breastfeed until 4-5, but here it is pretty extreme. Also, I don't believe that there is a real physical/medical benefit to go that long in our society. Those places where they do breastfeed longer tend to have food that are harder for young children to digest.

One of the biggest reasons some cultures advocate long-term breast feeding is that it can inhibit chances of getting pregnant immediately somewhat (by NO means is it anywhere close to a true birth control method, but having nothing else available...).

For my part, I have memories of being 3, 4, 5... so there is just no way I could see going that long. That said, I did breastfeed my first almost 2 years and my second for 18 months. At that point, it just was too physically draining on me, so I quit.

Per Dr Sears, in general... he says some good things, but I don't agree with all of his philosophy by any means.

I'm 43 and my mum is still breast feeding me. I should of bought a house closer to the family home because she doesn't drive.

Apart from the fact that I haven't breastfed anyone myself, Player said almost exactly what I was gonna say.

I think of all the problems that are afflicting American children, longer than usual breastfeeding is, like, the least of them. If at all.

Very good looking mom!! probably not a whole lot of much milk in her small tits though. I bet the kid could slurp it up in one big suck.

The kid looks pretty healthy on it. I didn't read - is that all the kid gets?

No. Its rarely even a primary source of nutrition at that late a stage. Even in societies that routinely practice late nursing, the kids will eat other food. Its sort of a combination of a nutrition supplement and comfort. The comfort is often as much about the mom -- whether things like birth control or just her wanting to keep her kids close or other factors -- than about the child. I have seen things like continuing immunity for diseases are sometimes cited. However, that is not much of an issue in our society today with such widespread vaccinations available.

You really know that the size of breasts and the amount of milk they produce do not actually correlate, don't you?
