Yes! You have shown me the way! I have seen the light and changed my wicked ways. Sorry, I would have replied sooner but I was too busy speaking in tongues!

BTW...anyone know of a good "Tongues-to-English" online translator? I really need to find out what "babba loo dinky, hummna hummna" means as I keep saying it often while drooling on the floor.

Good for you...I applaud.

As you state it does take much effort however...which again implies the intrinsic, pompous, holier than though, "my gods bigger than your god" base nature of all religions. After all, if you didn't think your way was the right & only way, you wouldn't have chosen to devote your life to it.

How about asking this question Backglass? Why are atheists so annoying? There are plenty out there I've met who see religion as a danger to society, and then go around harping about the evil spaghetti monster. Why do so many atheists have to adopt a "more-scientific-than-thou" attitude? I know more physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics than many atheists I know of all ages, and yet a good many of them just radiate an "I'm smarter than theists" attitude.

This "annoying" thing you're referring to is certainly not limited to theists, let alone Christians.

Hey now, I didn't start the thread. ;) Of course you are right. "Annoying" comes in all races, religions and fashion trends. Especially fashion trends.

Ok, Blackglass made some rather generalised statements and Anglican rebutted them. Now can't we all unite in the fact that it is the really Evangelical and pushy Christians (and really, anyone of any religion or opinion who is particulary pushy) that we actually hate?

Atheists (that is to say anti-religious atheists, and crusading atheists) are quite annoying. Just as annoying, in fact, as evangelizing Christians. This is primarily due to the fact that while they decry being annoyed/bothered by people professing their faith, they do the same while talking about their own lack of belief.

Evangelism is annoying, regardless of the faith (or lack thereof).

Didn't Jesus say something like "before you can remove the ash from your brother's eye, you must first remove the beam from your own?"

This.....I agree with. Oddly I like the verbal sparring, so as a writer it's fun to engage. I try to avoid actually proselytizing. Annoying or not, I wouldn't have anyone shut up though. Free speech, for those who disagree with me, is better than a gag for those I agree with.

Well how about you unite with all the other Evangelical Christians until you all get tired of eachother and realise that endless preaching is not going to 'save anyone's soul'

If Norse is even still reading this I'll try to answer his question.

First off, I don't think all Christians are annoying myself. Baptists, yes. Evangelical? HELL YES. But not all denominations. I'm Presbyterian myself, we are fairly laid back. Opinionated, but laid back.

I choose to follow the Presbyterian doctrine because it seems the most right of all religious belief systems I've found. My true beliefs at my core though are quite different.

To explain...

If you were God, and you wanted as many 'quality' people to join you in eternity as possible, what would you do? I would create as many different paths to me as possible. Any religion that preaches ultimately to do what is right in my eyes would be acceptable. Those that fail the religion they choose will not be with me, they will go to 'hell' so to speak.

So there is no 'right' religion. There are some wrong religions, but they are easily identifiable. I also have a different belief regarding 'hell' then most. I believe that hell is simply a place that exists without God. People choose to live a life without God they can spend death without him as well. It isn't necessarily a place of torture, but it probably isn't paradise either. I would assume it is similar to where we are now.

I don't know any other evangelical Christians who do that. It seems that you're bothered with the very fact that we exist. The church that I go to forces nobody to enter the doors. When people decide to convert it's their own choice after hearing the message. Why do you object to someone exercising their right to choose to convert?

No, I wasn't objecting to people choosing to convert on their own at all. What I was objecting too are the people who, insted of letting people choose their own religion, go out and do a little active recruiting. The "Repent lest ye spend eternity in Hell" type people. I don't care what religion you are, but when you start to push it on me and others, thats when I start objecting.

Well, they do believe their way is the only correct one. If you thought everyone who didn't take a vaccine for a plague was going to die how many people would you try to force it on?

No

When you were a monkey, swinging about in the tree masturbating and cavorting neighbour-monkey's wife, as everyone should be, can we agree that you led a better life than your self-delusionary, fairy-preaching existance now?

What's wrong with a little hope? And if even one in a hundred believers actually follow the tenets of their religion (which would usually be a good thing), I consider it a success.

What happened? I can't get to the forums for 2 days, and a 9 page debate on why Christianity is annoying emerges from the primordial soup?

Stopper wrote:After years of research, I can heartily recommend the following extracts: Job 3:12, Proverbs 5:19, and Solomon 4:5 and 7:3.

Gary Jismer, Email

This is incredibly ironic, considering that 3 of the 4 verses mentioned are in the context of marital fidelity, and the other is a referance to one's mother.

Neutrino wrote:Now can't we all unite in the fact that it is the really Evangelical and pushy Christians (and really, anyone of any religion or opinion who is particulary pushy) that we actually hate?

I'm evangelical, but by my estimate, probably not "pushy" enough. Let me give this conversation a slightly different bent.

1. The belief system of Christianity DEMANDS a certain amount of pushyness. I sincerely believe that everyone who does not believe in Christ as their personal Saviour will spend eternity under torture. Now, while I understand that many of you don't agree with this belief of mine, that in no way lessens my conviction. So, if I care at all for you, I have a responsibility to try to convince you to accept Christ. Normally, if we had a personal relationship, it would not seem as pushy, but in an online forum, there's only so much you can do. In good conscience, I cannot simply say, "Well, if they want to go to hell, that's their problem" That would be akin to allowing a blind man stay in a burning building because he wants to finish supper. Just because he doesn't accept the existence of the danger is it any less real.

2. A lot of people are too easily annoyed. Look, all that being said, if you enter a thread called "Continuation of Christianity Debate" or " Question for the Religious Types" or "Logic dictates that there is a God" or "Jesus Freaks" or "The Fish Club - Christians come and discuss our faith." you can necessarily expect Christians to be discussing their faith. It's what it's their for. And if you think that Christians are pushy for creating threads in which they can discuss or debate their beliefs, then everyone in every internet forum is pushy, because that's what forums are about, discussing or debating ideas. If you can't handle it, try reading the thread titles and figuring out whether or not it has to do with religion, and if it does, skip it. There are lots of threads that I don't read because I'm pretty sure they're going to be a waste of time.

So, to answer the question:
You are probably annoyed by Christians because you don't agree with their perspective on eternity. They feel you are on your way to hell, and you either disagree or don't care. However, they are persistent, because they actually care about what they believe, you would prefer that they not live their lives in a way consistent with their belief system.

They feel you are on your way to hell

I think this quite nicely sums up my point.

I am doomed
I need someone more enlightened than me to save me from myself
I am wrong in my believes

Has anyone ever told you that you lack tact and people skills?
