And it does not harm the bigo...er.. christians to allow gay people to marry each other. No christian priests will be forced to wed gays, any more than they are currently forced to marry Muslims.

Let me clarify that not all Christians even agree that homosexuality is wrong. Many do, but there are more than a few priests, ministers and pastors who have administered marriage rights or unification rights for homosexual couples.

Also, whether homosexuality is or is not accepted within the church is an entirely seperate issue from whether it should be allowed by those who are not members of that church.

Whether homosexuals should be allowed to marry or unify, in turn, is a distinct question from whether the state should recognize such unions in the way they do heterosexual marriages.

Right now, the religious issue is .. a religious issue debated within the churches.
Anyone can have a ceremony of union and even call themselves married if they wish, but only a few states recognize such unions as having any legal standing, either identical to marriage or in any other way.

Priests are not the only people who marry others. You don't even have to go to church to get married. Gay people aren't asking for weddings in a church, they are asking for a marriage-license from the government.

In the US, this is not entirely true. The marriage license gives the people permission to marry, the ceremony is needed to actually confer marriage in the US. A justice of the peace and captains at sea can marry, but the overwhelming majority of people do get married in churches (of one type or other). Clergy are given legal standing to perform the ceremonies, not just the state.

Also, whether a civil union or other type "civil only marriage" is acceptable is debated within the gay community. The church issue is partially a religious issue, but there are already plenty of churches that do recognize such unions. The state does not honor them in most states, though.

Uh yeah that's what I meant actually. Someone ofcourse needs to marry people, I meant that it doesn't have to be a priest and that a priest isn't obligated to marry people he doesn't want to marry.

That said, I believe plenty of dudes who marry people are more than willing to marry gay couples.

Well, take me for example. I will be getting married this summer. The ceremony will be performed by a Justice of the Peace. No church. No priest.

Uffda I am very sick of the way you talk about North Dakota. What is it about North Dakotaians that you hate soo much.If they are going to marry not have a civil union but an actual marriage it would be done by a preist or Rabbi or some religous minister.

I do not believe in marriage being done by someone other than a religous minister.

I believe that a person can chose to be married by whoever they want but I think it should be done by a preist or some other religous minister.

If their beliefs are bigoted, they have no right imposing them on other people. If they didn't want to marry certain people they shouldn't have gone into the business of marrying people. I would liken it to a police officer deciding to never arrest Asian people, because he believes that they don't break the law.
