Yes, and it was based on a true story. It shows the power of demons...or um elves in your case.

Funny...let me see if I have this straight. Exorcist - Good, Harry Potter - Bad.

So it's OK to watch fantasy movies if good triumphs in the end?

I also do not believe in demons or exorcists Jay. You see...it's just a movie. You can relax!

I suppose when you see "This film is based on a true story" or "actual events" its just producers lying to hype up the movie. Ok...I think I get it now. If you don't buy something its not true. Gotcha.

No, The Exorcist was not "good" and the first time I watched it I was 7 years old..... long before I knew better.

Scripture tells us not to dabble in witchcraft.

Wait, so WHY haven't you read Harry Potter? Personally, I think they're overrated books, and I don't particularly understand why they're so popular, but my religion has in no way prevented me from reading them... nor has my religion in any way been weakened because of them... nor have I recieved temptation to "dabble in witchcraft".

Furthermore, I have found them to in no way conflict with my religion. If fantasy is against Christianity... well that's a little odd. Some of the top figures in fantasy writing were Christian. C.S. Lewis comes to mind, and I THINK J.R.R. Tolkien, but I could be wrong.

Dabbling in witchcraft and reading a FICTIONAL BOOK about it are two very different things. That's like saying it's bad to read a book in which a character commits adultery (which quite a lot of American literature contains... the Great Gatsby for instance, and the Scarlet Letter).

That's a bit too extreme mate.

I haven't read HP because I don't like FANTASY. I also haven't seen any of the Predator movies or Alien movies. Why? Because its fantasy... it could never happen and or I just plain find them BORING. If your faith doesn't tell you to be careful around demonic things, you might re-examine your faith.

I think they tend to use the phrase "based on a true story" pretty loosely in Hollywood. The events portrayed in these movies are not necessarily true depictions of what happened at all. If I'm not mistaken, the Exorcist movie was "based on" William Peter Blatty's novel which in turn is based on an exorcism which took place in the 40s and was conducted on a boy. Plenty of opportunity for both embellishment and error. In short, yes - producers probably do use the "true story" tag to create hype.

Your scripture also tells you not to suffer a witch to live. Dare I ask if you've killed any lately.

If you choose not to read them because you dont like the genre, that's a bit more rational.

A book is not a demonic thing when it is FICTION. J.K. Rowling in no way states that if I wave a wand and say magic words I can make a cat fly. Nor is there any mention of demons or anything such as that in her books.

If you were to follow this line of argument, you could say that Star Wars should be banned because there is "the Force", which is obviously demonic because it is a power given to people which God would disapprove of were it REALLY existant. Most people, myself included, would say that Star Wars is one of the greatest morality tales ever to hit modern audiences.

You keep posting stuff, but you are yet to logically prove god's existence.

Maybe the title should be changed to say: Irrationality dictates that there is a god.

I take that personally. I've read about half of the above article and am in the process of reading the second half. There's a lot of stuff it mentions in said article which I believe I have addressed already... but if there's any points of it you would like me to focus on I would be more than happy to write a response.

Unlikely for the human mind to comprehend. It wasn't a 12 year old girl who did that, it was the being or beings inside her. I think its safe to assume that demons are quite strong. Mothman Prophesy was another movie about the power of demons, in this case the ability to predict the future (now we know where mediums and psychics derive their power) This movie was also based on actual events.

Jay... regan's head twisting around, like the levitating bed and the crucifix nastiness, was what is called 'artistic licence'. It makes for a better story and a more engaging film. It's not real an it's quite important that you realise this.
What about the X-files? Partially true?
I think if my brain was wired like yours, i.e. just to accept unquestioningly as fact whatever weirdness screenwriters dream up to keep us watching, i would never leave my house.

I don't know if the true story from which the movie was based had the kids head turning 360 degrees, it may well be movie hype. Do I believe it could happen? Yes. Demon possesion is real wether you believe it or not.

I do not, nor have I ever watched X Files. Science Fiction/ Fantasy do not interest me. I did however watch Logan's Run and Dr. Who as a kid. (A little Star Trek mixed in)

Jay, The Exorcist is a MOVIE. Not everything in movies is true. Just because it may have been based on a real event doesn't mean that they can't start off with the truth then make up an ending that would be more entertaining to an audience.

Apocolipse Now was a movie and Vietnam happend.

Titanic was a movie and it sunk.

Flight 93 was a movie and it was hijacked.

Just because something is made into a MOVIE doesn't render it made up.

The girl had a mental illness. She spoke in odd voices. She barfed. She peed herself. She said mean horrible things. The Catholics around her couldnt believe that a little girl could say such things...therefor it MUST be a demon. The ice in the room, moving furniture, twisting head, etc...thats HOLLYWOOD.

Theres your "based on a true story". She needed medical attention....not a priest.

Jay, there are people in asylums right now who claim they are JESUS. Are they? Or is that different?

And on a side note...why do you never hear of demonic possesion amongst Muslims, Hindu's or Amish? Why only Catholics?

I want to see an Amish Exorcism. "UP THINE WITH A MILKING MACHINE FOUL DEMON!"

Actually Muslims at least do believe in demons...they call them Jinns...the origin of the word Genie.....there are good Jinn and there are bad Jinn (apparently )

I recently read an article about a Saudi man who was , wait for it......., trying to get a divorce from a female Jinn who he claimed was obsessed with him and would not leave him alone..who he had agreed to marry and had even had conjugal relations with her...he now wanted to divorce her but she would not leave.......he was travelling around the muslim world trying to be exsorcised..

This would make a good movie actually... any ideas for a title?

Just thought you might find the above interesting...

I'm more puzzled, to be honest...So, did this Jinn look anything like the girl in the Exorcist? And if so, what cleric would, in his right mind, agree to marry the man to the Jinn?

I agree wholeheartedly with both quotes, and both are affirmed by the Catechism. However, I don't see what that has to do with the link Jay provided. I think the little narrative, while obviously biased and a little on the corny side, does a half-way decent job of answering to a few of the common attacks on Christianity in an easy to understand way (ie, how it is possible for a good God to create "evil", etc).

Perhaps I didn't read it closely enough :?

Well, it certainly shows some imagination. Though the "attacks," as you call them, are seen as some to be logical barriers blocking the scientifically-inclined mind from seeing the greater frame of religion.

Cute reversal of fortunes though, quite useful.
