I lift weights for football which also involves running and conditioning and I am currently a brown belt in Karate and may test for black belt within the next few months.

Oh cool.

Same as my girlfriend. She used to fight for the Kyokushinkai Karate England squad.
Thats how i met her, we fought against each other.

I like sparring against Karate because its so completely different from Shaolin.

Yeah, I've done some kung fu and Judo in the advanced classes in karate and it is different. We don't really have sparring in our class, we have people fighting each other but since most of the moves are designed to break bones, tear ligiments, dislocate, or kill, we don't make contact.

Do you have any moves that you like?

We spar because we are trained to street fight, there is no point scoring.

Favorate move for Karate? i dont know the names because i have only fought against Karate. Having said that im very fond of the kicks in Karate. Although much more predictable than Shaolin they hit harder and look much much cooler. And generally they knock down where as Shaolin kicks very often dont.
The blocks of course are excellent as far as i have seen but then the opponents i have faced tend not to dodge but instead block where as we tend to dodge/dance.

I was talking your favorite martial arts move altogether. I kinda like being able to disarm a guy while coming in and elbowing him full-force, ideally when his momentum is still going forward.

I like the blocks in karate but I tend to be a little bit of a dancer myself, taking people away from their strong lines and keeping them off balance. It really is mostly what you are comfortable with.

Ah i see
In which case i am probably with you. I like the Tai Chi turn into an opponents punch and the close guard elbow into the face.
I like that mainly because (being quite slim/small) im very fast and this works beautifully for me.

I havent ever fought against a Karate martial artist who dances around. I can imagine that would be bloody hard to beat due to Karate having solid strikes. Dancing as well would make you a pain in the ass to knock down.
As you say, it is completely dependant on the person.

On a side note, a friend of mine does Shotokan Karate and he told me something interesting (i cannot vouch for him though so it may be rubbish) But he told me the belts came from this situation. The original group of Karate practicioners all used to wear a white belt. They only had one so as time went on it got dirty and eventually was black. Therefore the blacker the belt the longer the student had been studying Karate.
Like i say im not sure if its true but its interesting

Yes that is the way that it started. When they first started using belts they would start white and as they got dirtier they would eventually turn black. It is also why we are not allowed to wash our belts in karate under that tradition.

I would technically not go all the way up to the face with the elbow I would break a few ribs and get out quickly. I feel as I get higher up, I tend to lose some of the grounding in my stance, while if I am lower I make a much more solid impact without giving up the speed at which I can get out of there.

As far as your friend are you sure you didn't mean Shudokan and not shotokan?

To be honest, no im not sure. He said SHotokan but i have no idea how its spelled.

I didnt know you werent allowed to wash your belts.

Thats also something the Shaolin are very strict on, we have excellent low posture. Same with Tai Chi.

The more "worn" your belt looks the better. I have heard that people will wash theirs over and over and cut them up a bit to make them look older. Even though you shouldn't. My instructors belt was almost grey, but not because he washed it. It has had plenty of use.
