American Airlines Atrocities - episode 87

Postby mrswdk on Wed Jan 15, 2020 6:05 am

A Delta Airlines air plane in the middle of a Boeing Crash Landing (TM) has today dumped so much fuel on top of dozens of unsuspecting school children, teachers and parents at numerous schools that they had to receive specialist medical care for their injuries:

An airplane returning to Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday morning dropped jet fuel onto a school playground, dousing several students at Park Avenue Elementary School in Cudahy, officials said.

Delta Flight 89 — a Boeing 777 — had taken off from LAX with more than 140 passengers on board and was en route to Shanghai when it turned around and headed back to the L.A. airport.

A total of 60 patients were treated, at least 20 of them children. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said more than 70 firefighters and paramedics headed to Park School Elementary, where 20 children and 11 adults were treated for minor injuries. Additionally, six people at Tweedy Elementary School and six at San Gabriel Elementary in South Gate were affected, as was one adult at Graham Elementary School. L.A. City Fire treated 16 patients at Jordan High School in Long Beach and 93rd Street Elementary in Green Meadows.

Yes, you missed the point.

Boeing sales and delivery figures, published by the company on Tuesday, showed a loss of 87 commercial airplane orders compared to its order backlog at the end of 2018, a result of cancelled orders combined with sluggish new purchases.

Although orders have been gradually slowing across the aerospace industry, rival Airbus recorded 768 orders for the year, putting Boeing's woes into even sharper contrast.

Boeing is bleeding for 10 months and the wound looks mortal!

Congrats. You really blew that one out of proportion, chicken little.. Not one person had to even go to the horsepittal

Also....American Airlines is a company. Title is very misleading. This was a Delta Airlines problem ( and they tend to have a lot....I won't fly Delta).

Airplane is one word.

Lastly, I rarely see the use of dual adverbs. Very confusing. Maybe you should post in Chinese so you can be more.....literate.

KB's analysis: none of the children sprayed with fuel had to be taken to emergency acute care, therefore this doesn't matter.

I guess in a country where school children have to practice hiding under their desks to survive gun massacres, a little jet fuel in the lungs is probably no big deal.

Does anyone here work for the Aviation Administration and/or know anything about airline safety protocols?

I’m not saying this was right or justified... but it’s seems likeSOP when a pilot is expecting a crash landing. This prevents explosion and fire. This actual instance may not have called for it... we don’t know it’s still under investigation.

I wouldn’t be happy to get jet fuel dumped on me... but if the option were;
a) get doused with jet fuel, get sick and lose your cloths. it otherwise be OK...and 140 people live.
b) refuse getting doused and 140 people die.

I’d choose option ‘a’ thank you.

Obviously mrswdk wouldn’t. . his personal comfort trumps the lives of the 140 people onboard.

Yes they have to dump fuel to achieve a safe landing weight. They are usually a bit higher so the fuel evaporates instead of soaking Children in a school yard.

In some places they wouldn't have dumped the fuel and this thread would be about the wings breaking off. Instead of it being pilot error he would say something like, "Boeings can't land without the wings breaking off."

If you'd been interested in finding out the answer to this, you could literally have just read the article I posted:

“There are special fuel-dumping procedures for aircraft operating into and out of any major U.S. airport. These procedures call for fuel to be dumped over designated unpopulated areas, typically at higher altitudes so the fuel atomizes and disperses before it reaches the ground,” officials said in a statement.

An example of an unpopulated area would be an ocean, said Douglas Moss, aviation consultant and a retired United Airlines pilot.

If you weren't interested in finding out the answer but rather just making excuses for the American company, you could just spray a load of speculation at the wall and see what sticks.

Don't get me wrong Boring made a huge error trying to make the Max into an Airbus product. Not having both AOA sensors integrated as part of the automation? #-o

Maybe it was just lucky it took so long before semi competent crews crashed a few.

They must have run out of engineers that could build a proper all new plane to carry those engines. You can't beat those older '37s except for their thirst for fuel. Sort of made sense to hang those big fans on there except pilot skills are lost by guys that are satisfied riding around drinking coffee while Otto drives.

I hope they can figure things out before they do go broke. Time will tell.

There was a time when Brits spelled it "aeroplane", which actually describes what happens, but caused many schoolchildren to get poor marks in spelling.

When I was in school, we were taught that both alternatives are allowable. So most kids spelt it airplane, but of course I went the extra mile and spelt it aeroplane.

People here still do. Nowadays people would more usually just write or say 'plane', but if writing/saying it out in full it would still be 'aeroplane'.

It reminds me of the French word aeroglisseur, or "air slider" which has a lovely sound and is much less poetic in English as "hovercraft".
