You do realise the only people in the world who want Tibet to become an independent nation state are whiny American college students, right?
Oh... and the actual people in/from Tibet.
Sounds like you are very well-informed about the views of people who grew up in and/or currently live in Tibet. I'd love to hear more about your research into this topic.
The native people of Tibet have clearly and vocally expressed their opinions for years all over the world whenever they have an opportunity to do so. I have been in Boston, New York, Paris, London, and Munich and I have seen native Tibetan people volunteer their time (at parks with tables and pamphlets) to spread the word about Chinese oppression of their people and culture. I have seen, stopped at, and spoken to these people.
I have spoken about Tibet with many Chinese people I have been friends with throughout my life. I have never received a clear answer as to why they think China should hold Tibet. None have ever claimed Tibetan people where Chinese, they all were clear that they considered Tibetans to be different... but none could explain why China should hold it. Some gave “self defense” I guess from India? as a reason.
The only honest answer I ever got was from my former boss/employer. She was born in China in the 60’s and grew up in Beijing in the 70’s and 80’s. Her reason was “It’s Chinese culture and tradition, you NEVER give up what you father handed down to you.”. Essentially she just said... our fathers and grandfathers took the country, and now it’s ours. We will never give it up.
