Get laid? While you're wasting your time on an internet chat forum? I bet the closest you've come to getting laid was a mƩnage Ơ moi with Palmela Handerson.

Come on, for f*ck's sake, it only takes a minute to look something up in a dictionary. That is, of course, assuming you have one and that you know the alphabet.

Okay, that's fair. And good use of the german. You must know your German philosophers too.

So, you're more a fan of Robert Altman, then, huh?

Or, perhaps the better question is: tell us some comedies you DO like, so we can get an idea of where you're coming from.

Immanuel Kant was a real piss ant who was very rarely stable,
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar who could think you under the table,
David Hume could out-consume Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel,
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine & was just as sloshed as Schlegel.
There's nothing Nietzsche couldn't teach ya about the raising of he wrist,
Socrates himself was permanently pissed.

pimpdave wrote:So, you're more a fan of Robert Altman, then, huh?

Not especially, I had to look on IMDb to see who he was.

As you can probably already guess, I like the surreal humour of the Monty Python films. I particularly like satirical comedies like Dr Strangelove, Team America, Network, Whoops Apocalypse, Brazil, Starship Troopers, Blazing Saddles et cetera. Then there's the sick/horror comedies like Evil Dead 2, Series 7 (The Contenders), Battle Royale, Bad Boy Bubby, Braindead, Shaun Of The Dead, etc. Don't get me wrong, there's also the silly stuff like Airplane, Blues Brothers, Happy Gilmore, Shaolin Soccer, Cheech & Chong, Borat and so on - not exactly highbrow stuff, but films where I was actually interested in what would happen to the characters & what was coming next. Unlike Superbad, where my only concern was how much longer would I have to wait until the end. Which, incidentally, I didn't end up doing.

The best comedy is british. There are a few American movies and shows which are funny, often due to the surreal and bizarre themes or jokes, but most try so desperately hard to be funny they overdo it and as a result end up horribly bad. I have only one american comedy on dvd (Naked Gun) and the rest are british. The absurd and self-depricating humour of the british is something Americans just can't do, just look at the difference between the two versions of The Office.

I find the best jokes in american movies to be those in non-comedies (except for a few). The movie doesn't focus on being really, really funny (hey, what if our main character stuck his dick in a pie?lol) so they take a more relaxed approach to it and end up having actually very funny moments.

There have been a large number of funny US TV series. The problem is that if successful they always go on for too many series, and you forget how fresh and funny they were at first.

The US also tends to confuse sit com and soap opera, and the the series becomes "who fancies who" far too often. Far less happens in a Brit sit-com, the humour grows from the characters and their usually fixed relationship.

Here's a few funny US shows taht went on too long

Roseanne - the first few series were brilliant social satire, but they ended up too far from their roots and several series past any funny ideas.

Cheers Got caught up in the whole "who's going out with who" thing at the end, but started off really funny.

Frasier - only lost it right toward the end

The Simpsons - still regularly wins UK polls for best comedy/sitcom/cartoon.

even Friends was good for at least the first couple of series.

One of my favourite TV series ever was Due South.

True. I don't think I can recall any american comedy-series which didn't have that problem. It's not that I don't think they're funny, they just don't have enough funny. I mean, Scrubs is a brilliant show at times but I just can't stand that "I have learned a valuable lesson"shit they do at the end of each episode. I hate it with a passion because I honestly could give less than a rats ass about their emotional development.

I also hate the canned laughter. It's main purpose is fooling the audience into thinking they are watching a funny show. A lot of jokes are way less funny if you watch them without it, try it sometime.

Oh yeah I forgot about Frasier, that is one of the funny shows from the US.

Cartoons are different. I enjoy the simpsons, futurama, family guy and american dad tremendously, but that's because they're a completely different genre. It's not a sitcom or satire of a particular thing. I don't think I even know a british cartoon-series.

True, it managed to avoid the "who fancies who" syndrom for quite some time.

Don't be too sure the laughter is always canned.
The first time I went to the cinema in the US, and saw some feeble comdey with the kids, the Americans were guffawing and even clapping over every double take, fart, I-got-hit-in-the-willy, and "what are the odds?".

On the other hand when I went to see "the Bank Job", which I thought was very funny as well as being a good thriller, I and the Mrs were alone in laughing out loud.

Pssst, snorri, in Naked Gun the main guy is Canadian.

I suppose you're right about that. I got a cd from a stand-up comedian, and the audience laughs at at fucking every fucking joke with great enthusiasm. The guy is pretty funny, but I really don't think all of his jokes are that funny.

I've obviously been spoiled I guess.
