I would've grabbed his arm and proceeded to kick him in the nuts in the hopes that he would drop the knife. I'm not a big person so I'd most likely have to use both hands to grasp his knife hand. Too soon? Yup. Funny? depends on how morbid your sense of humour is.

#1) This happened between Brandon, and Portage la Prarie in Manitoba, an hour from the capitol, Winnipeg.

#2) He was a landed immigrant, and had been in the country for 4 years.

#3) Yes he did butcher, behead and eat some of the corpse.

#5) Yeah. Go stick that knife up his ass. You ever been on a greyhound? The isles are 30 inches a part with no room to manouver. You are unarmed, and can only strike with fists as you are on a rolling buss, with seats blocking your legs. You don't ever want to grapple a knife wielding man in close quarters, so how would you do it hero??

#6) Intervention? This assumes you are right next to the event. And I mean across the isle. If you are near the front, are you going to block the one exit and prevent 20 panicked people from exiting? Wading though them to get to this armed violent man in the throws of a psycotic episode? You slow down the herd of hysterical exiting people to save a corpse????

#7) If this dude wasn't horribly fixated on his ONE victim, think of the carnage he COULD have done.( He stabbed the young man 40-50 times before butchering him.) Most passengers were dozing. He could have killed 1/2 a dozen before everyone could get out. Meanwhile your bunching up the fleeing crowd, mostly women and kids, slowing their exit so he can waste 4 or 5 more?

They did the right thing. They got out of harms way, saved lives and by using their heads, contained the guy on the buss until the RCMP arrived 10 min. later.
If this guy walked into a mall, or a daycare, or an old folks home and started chopping up folks, then YES! You and whoever else has sack rushes him and saves those who cannot defend themselves. But I've been in enough knife and street fights to know that you pick your ground and use your head. Your heart can get you killed.

It should have been "Look, we're safer than most forms of travel."
