PRK's defense was really great until they gave up that first goal (which was very stupid). But after that it looked like they lost a lot of confidence.

Elano's goal and the assist were beautiful.

HA! As I was writing this, the Koreans scored.

The Koreans were awesome today, defended really well and their striker did really well. Great second goal for Brazil.

A resolute, solid, and dignified display from North Korea. No executions back home for any squad members I gather - Kim Jong-il can be proud of this result. I wouldn't hold my breath about North Korea being the 'whipping boys' this group, especially if they give a similar show to Ivory Coast and Portugal, who will, undoubtedly, succumb to a bigger defeat than DPR Korea did against Brazil. This narrow defeat definitely has a lot of positives to be taken from it.

All hail Kim Jong-il for guiding the team successfully and keeping their World cup dreams alive - it's still wholly possible for them to escape the Group of Death.

I'm conflicted. The N Koreans are clearly a gutsy classy team. But their dictator is a d-bag.

As far as I'm concerned, the English press are a bunch of biotches. They have a lot of nerve calling that a win for us. We are ranked 14th, not far behind their 9th. And going into it a draw was never a win. England soccer fans are arrogant whiny punks and I only hope we meet you in the second round so that we can take care of some unfinished business.

And World Cup shocker? Please. We fully expected to get at least a tie from this game. We had a mental lapse that gave England a goal. England's Green had a huge error. But Altidore almost won it on his shot. And we had more chances than England. Shocker? I have rooted for England as my 2nd team (since I"m mostly British heritage) since 1990. So I know all about the good teams that choked. If anything Britons should be more humble and not disrespect their opponents like this.

I don't know whether we're being trolled here or you just have no idea what you're talking about on many, many different levels. I'm gonna play it safe.

Messi looked very, very good. I don't know how you could watch the game and say that

Yea, im not saying he didnt look good, but the messi i watched all year finished those, he easily should have had 2 goals...but he got off 8 shots and really dictated the offense. i just think he was a little off

I see your point but I think it was a combination of bad luck and excellent goalkeeping rather than Messi being off form. Wasn't his day, but it looks like Argentina are finally starting to make the most of him.

I didn't pick Spain to win the cup but looks like most people in this thread did, see how your guys team does tonight ;)

Not impressed with 5 time champs last night either, 2-1 against NKorea... PLEASE

sucks about Nani too, Port really needed him last night.

I didn't pick anybody either. I think maybe people are just having fun, but I don't think it's as clear cut as Spain and Brazil are dominant. Germany looked really good btw. They looked the best so far, but Spain hasn't played yet.

I thought England has had much better teams in the last 20 years with all due respect to the US team's performance against them. I think the Brits are kind of in denial about how good their team is.

Decide to take the foot out of your mouth and remove all doubt did you? I was calling a spade a spade. Thanks for demonstrating my point. You have no idea how over-rated your team is. Nobody fears your team. So don't try to blame it on trolling. That's just sad. I made one simple rational point and you try to pretend 'ah darr your just so stupid on so many levels.' I'll give you a spoon and you can eat my ass.

I give England a chance but as I already mentioned, I do think they are over-rated and I would bet against them to not reach the semis as usual. USA I think is more talented then people like the a-hole above gives us credit for. I don't think we have much of a chance of winning it because of our lack of a solid striker. And I think England did expose some of our back line breakdowns.

I'm high on Germany. I think Spain and Brazil are favs but I just dont think they dominate always.

I think Argentina is the most over-rated team in the tourney. They got a win in their first game so they'll probably make it to the 2nd round, but I don't expect them to make much noise.

I fully agree the England team isn't great and that we will almost certainly not win the world cup. I thought you were trolling because you dissected a US paper's page on the match at great length as evidence for the English press being "biotches", English arrogance etc. You also made a comment about us possibly meeting the US in the second round, which would indicate you know almost nothing about how the tournament works.

I guess I accept that apology lol.

Someone else already posted the picture. You can go back and check it. I just took the words out. But the headline is being played on ESPN. It's not a secret. I was not aware it was a US paper (if it is) because ESPN mostly has talked about it in the context of how the English press is complaining. If that's a US paper that did it then their editors are clearly ignorant and know nothing of US soccer.

As for the tournament, I know how it works. I guess I wasn't thinking that the winner and runner-up would have to meet in the final. But the operative word was still hope in any event. And although I give the US long shot odds and England less than stellar odds of reaching the final, I have to acknowledge that the teams at least have the talent to do it.

No worries, I take back my crass retort then.

a) that's the American press
b) the USA went in HOPING for a draw
c) the paper is being witty while still making a point, because
d) a tie for the USA was a great psychological victory
e) England is overrated but still a very good team

a. - That headline is lame regardless of who posted it. I was not doing cart wheels when we got the draw. I went into it think we could win.
b. Never at any time heading into that match, was the US playing for a draw. Check all the interviews and pundits and you'll see that.
c. The paper is not witty. They are imbecilic.
d. A draw was something we were willing to settle for. That's a far shot off from a psychological victory. Obviously any time you're playing the best team in your group and you know you can get the other 2 games then you want salvage value. That's just simple math.
e. That's exactly what I said.
f. #9 vs #14 when I looked. What did a new rank come out? Who gives a rats....It's the same thing.
g. You can take the spoon and dig in instead.

a - Maybe you should stick to baseball. Because a draw was pretty much the most likely outcome to begin with. You do realize that there is a hair's difference between 9 and 14 at the WC right?
b. I'm not happy with the result. I was happy when England gifted us a goal and we got back into a game it looked like we might lose. But then I quickly thought about winning and not about can we stay even for a half. I think real US soccer fans realize this team does not play scared. Maybe at about 80th minute I just rooted for the draw because I think England is the better quick hitting team but even the England players said they saw that we weren't settling at that point and not until the last 3 minutes of extra time did both teams play for the tie.
c. ---
d. Ignorance. As I said the game plan was never to play for a draw. I think beyond that it was a result we'd settle for given our group is all. But now with Slovenia getting their fluke goal and beating Algeria, we face a must win scenario in the second game. And from that standpoint, the tie likely won't mean anything now.
e. I certainly had a gaffe, but yes English fans are arrogant. They have a false sense of supremacy. There's been a couple cups where they had a finalist worthy team and choked. If they reach the finals this year, it'll be over achieving.
f. - g. - Putting that to bed with c.

With Maradona coaching, you can only say "it's up to the players" for Argentina to go far :P I'm still pissed he prefers Higuain over Milito.

Disappointing draw for Ivory Coast, they so outrageously dominated Portugal in the first half I really thought they'd score, unfortunately this first day just loves draws so much it even gives Kiwis a chance -_- Anyway Portugal didn't show much, relying on long passes to Ronabdo, with from time to time luminous moves by Deco. Ivory Coast seemed monsters of physical toughness, though they ended the game a bit more out of it, they only lacked that one last pass to make it. Not sure if Drogba can be their savior (he still is playing injured after all) but they look better to get out of this group than the portuguese.

It looks like the brazilian press is right, Dunga managed to kill the Seleçao by making it a team to his image: rough, rigorous, and with little magic left. Kaka was painfully floating around as the ghost of what he once was (or never was but could be ), Robinho trying a lot but at a sluggish pace, they needed an amazing side shot from Maicon to score in second half. Facing North Korea. To end 2-1. O______O
I know it's only the first game and probably most teams are either nervous or restrained etc but when goal average can decide who passes I'm not sure if they couldn't be bothered or just couldn't do better. I still think Ronaldinho could have been a breeze of fresh air in this team, but wrong era for him. I won't say Brazil can't go far just seeing the other teams but I kinda hope they won't, thus ending the Dunga reign of terror.

Rooting for Chile today so I get at least one prediction right and Spain so that there can be at least one impressive looking team in this World Cup besides Germany :?

Yeah I did mention it was from a US newspaper when I originally posted the newspaper heading. You can easily tell when it says "Greatest tie against the British since Bunker Hill" You were playing England not Britain the other day, two different things, and the British press would never make such a awful mistake, no matter how idiotic some of the British press are (The Sun, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, etc).

Was brilliantly surprised by the last second leveller from New Zealand yesterday, literally jumped out my seat :) Was miles better than the Portugal-Ivory Coast game, urgh that was so boring.

Really enjoyed the Brazil-North Korea match too, North Korea certainly can be proud of that performance, was really glad that they scored because they deserved it. They had some of the best defending I've seen in this World Cup so far.

Watching Honduras-Chile so far, nothing much happening. Looking forward to the next two games, can't wait to see Spain play, and then South Africa get their second game. If South Africa want to get to the next round, I think it's a must win game against Uruguay.
