I remember as a kid reading in a novel where a bloke used his biscuits to mop up his gravy. Naturally I was curious to try this and used a biscuit to mop up my gravy the next time we had some. Of course, to the trained US eye, I would have been using a cookie to mop up my gravy.
It was disgusting, and it wasn't until my first visit to the US that I discovered what the author had meant.
