John Denver seems to be a recurring theme.

in "crouching tiger, hidden dragon", the sword that is stolen is called "the green destiny", yet it has a yellow tassle. is this just piss poor translating or should I buy a new tv?

I can't remember tbh. I started watching it but then got bored and gave up.

I just Baidu'd it and the translation sounds reasonable enough though (the 'green' is correct, at least). The sword also has a jade hilt, which will mean the hilt is green. All good :D

On a side note, I watched part of the film with the dubbed English soundtrack (rather than the original Chinese) and the accents are hilariously bad. You almost expect them to start going 'ching ching wing wong' at any moment. Painful.

tbh I can think of almost nothing I would want on my body for the rest of my life. I could possibly go for some sort of stylized 'interpretation' of the Yin Yang symbol, but not big and nowhere obvious.

Traditionally, the color yellow was the imperial color in China. As well as emperors having yellow clothes, the use of the color yellow on the roofs of buildings was reserved only for the emperor's buildings or for buildings commissioned by the emperor. That's why places such as the Forbidden City and Summer Palace (imperial residences), and the Temple of Heaven and Lama Temple (built by the emperor for imperial rituals) have yellow roofs, while the majority of other ancient structures that are still intact do not.

Unless the sword has some sort of relation to royalty then I don't think the above paragraph is relevant, but either way there's your history lesson so hush up.

iirc, the dude who owned the sword was a super duper soldier/bodyguard type so perhaps that would explain that yeller tassle...

Hey, I've seen the main hall there full of monks chanting in Tibetan on a couple of occasions.

And in any case, it is one of Beijing's biggest cultural landmarks. On any given day it is full of appreciative tourists.

The Lame Temple is a real fusion of traditional Tibetan and Han culture, Beijing meets Tibet, the ancient friendship on full display. Hooray for the PRC ^0^
