Juan_Bottom wrote:Thanks Player. My grandmother was Chippewa.... and damned proud of it. You did not joke about race with her, or she would beat you senseless. Men and women both; I've seen it. And grandpa showed me the knife...
With a little help from the KKK, and WWII, she was one of the few lucky enough to get away from the reservation and not have to go back. The impression that she gave us all was that it was hell on earth. You had one place to work for your whole life: the plastic utensil factory. Before that it was some type of kitchen cleaning utensil factory.
Can you imagine going to school when you were 5.... and the teacher says "What do you want to be when you grow up? You can be anything! A broommaker, of fork maker, or a mop maker!"
For the most part Americans are completly ignorant of the problem. Just goes to show you that the past has not left yet.

I'm sorry how did the KKK help your grandmother?

The KKK are a group that are not strictly aginst any one race. They target(ed) whoever is the minority in that area. If you're in California, the KKK were (or still are?) against the hispanics and asians. In the south it's the blacks... or mexicans.... and where my grandmother was, they attacked indians and blacks. With the NAs, they would drive out to the reservation and beat people, and sometimes kill them... a lot of times rape them... and then just drive off.... the indian police couldn't pursue them off the reservation, and the local police didn't care. Plus, it took a long time for the NA police to do anything anyways.
Anyway, my grandmother's brother was one of those indian police, and he got killed. I don't really know the other details. But grandma ended up in Canada after that helping with the war effort. Grandpa ended up there too after the Nazis invaded his home country. His family was killed as well, so they had a lot in common with fanatical racists and family deaths.

I believe the natives in Canada are in just as bad a shape or even worse than many in the US. This is a North American problem, not just in the US.

That's a nice story and everything, but I fail to see how that proves that your grandmother was our greatest president.

I mean, it's not like she was disastrous for the country or anything, but you kinda have to figure you have to get elected before you qualify...

I guess she deserves a better ranking than Bush though...

I see FDR has a lot of votes. For me FDR is difficult to make a desicion on. It is hard to call him a great president because of the court packing scheme but it is hard to call him a bad president because of the way he got us out of the depression and the way he led us through WWII.

Weirdly enough, the court packing scheme helped him pass the laws that people acknowledge got us out of the Depression.

Sultan, you could hold seminars around the country for the rest of your life, and the "war did it" theory would never, ever fade away. That's just how these sort of things are. Say something incorrect long enough and around enough uninformed people and it becomes ingrained within a society forever.

True. History books reinforce these myths too. The notion that Roosevelt's policies lifted the great depression has been debunked long ago (the opposite is true in fact) but the educational system continues to promote this lie. As for the notion that fighting is good for the economy, not even children would believe that, until they've gone through the so called "educational system".

I don't think that that was a good enough excuse for the scheme.
