But it's annoying how it's like some fucking little league baseball team, where everyone gets a trophy including the fat smelly kid who only occasionally gets to play right field.

Does anyone else feel this way?

This is not true. Let's say Barcelona, for example, they have the Spanish League (La Liga in which a player of the winning team has to play 10 games at least to be capable of getting a medal) as their main competition which starts in August and lasts till May.

Simultaneously, there's Spanish Cup (Cope del Rey), a minor competition in which most big teams are not interested so much. They have the most important competition meanwhile, it is called UEFA Champions League with 6 total games for each team in the group stage then you may advance to round of 16 if you got 1st or 2nd in your group. All of this ends in late May then summer activities start with National Teams competing!

There are world cup once per 4 years, and there are continental cups like Europe, Asia, Africa and even North America (named Golden Cup) some continents play them once per 4 years, and some do once per 2 years.

Yeh you have to ignore the local cups AoG, theyre just knockout comps that gives the little smaller clubs 15mins of fame.

La Liga, Series A, EPL and Champions League are the only competitions to watch for international fans (such as you and me). You can pretty much ignore the rest unless you have a special interest in a specific countries competition.

Still, these are just club championships and whatnot. Never mind the 40 different international cups (as Pirlo mentioned, each continent has its own, including the World Cup, Olympics, Confederations cup, etc. etc. etc).

I just think it's ridiculous how many god damned cups and championships there are, similar to college football bowls (if you don't know what college football bowls are, just imagine that each of the top 50 college teams in the US get to play for a "bowl game" which is pretty much pointless unless they're playing for the BCS championship).

There isn't any that matters.

The MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL are all monopolies, but that's a good thing. Instead of having the best players in the world spread out in different leagues like in soccer, they're all centralized into one main league. I could care less if the league was in the US or not, I just want to see the best players play the best players all the time.

And then have ONE GOD DAMNED (important) INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION, like Olympic basketball games (f*ck the FIBA World Cup), World Baseball Classic and Olympic hockey games.

Army of GOD lives in a sports world where clubs are nothing but business, franchises, whatever you want to call them. They have no history, they stand for nothing other than "this team is famous because it won a lot 20 years ago" or "this team is famous because it has all the big stars now." Its entirely plastic, a show. It's what sports clubs were never meant to be.

Most soccer clubs have histories that make them more than just representative of their city (keep in mind, most cities in Europe have more than 3+ teams each, counting lower divisions). In Argentina, Boca attracts the poor fans of Buenos Aires while River Plate attracts the rich. The Pontics who were victims of genocide and population exchange in Turkey (such as my great-grandparents) started a club in the Greek city Thessaloniki and all Pontic Greeks in the world support this team, PAOK. In Spain, the supporters of the Franco regime became Real Madrid fans, while his opponents rallied around the pro-Catalan Barcelona. CSKA was (is?) the official club of the Soviet army.

What do the Miami Heat stand for? Or the Penguins? Or any other American team? Some teams get a great following because of people being proud of their city, but most teams in America have no real history other than "we play hockey and we're from Pittsburgh." That's why American pro team fans sit on their hands all game. Because what is there to support? You can't even use the "I'm proud of this city" angle, because you've chosen to support teams from all different cities, simply because they win. And what happens when they don't win? You'll notice the same isn't true for college sports (although no college team in the country comes close to that of fans from outside America).

If you think that italian food is just bread and tomato you don't know the italian food and you're talking about things you have never tried.
Come here in italy and really try our food and then you will understand that what you said is bullshit.

What are you talking about?

I'll admit I'm not personally very passionate about professional sports. Really, the only time I've been superfluously passionate is when I, myself, am playing sports.

don't get me wrong, I care about my favorite sports teams, but if they lose than oh well, the other team was better than them.

I guess we're just at an impasse because we're demanding different things from sports. From what I gather, you want the competition to mean something ("What do the Miami Heat stand for?") while I, on the other hand, want to see the best possible competition. I am much more of a fan of sports in general than I am for the teams, which I think is pretty unique, so I won't get much support from other people, especially in this soccer thread.

The point I was making, which you got WAYYY off topic from, is that there are just too many god damn cups. I understand that some local clubs represent oppressed people, rich people, etc. But why the f*ck does there have to be 50,000 cups? What does it mean if Italy, who got ass-raped in the World Cup, beats Spain in the Euro Cup? Is that achievement as great, greater, less than or trivial than Spain winning the World Cup?

that's all I'm trying to say. I just think there are too many god damn soccer cups. It reminds me of college football bowls.

oh, and even though I should be rooting for Italy because one of my grandparents is Italian, I'll be rooting for Spain because of Italy beating France in the 2006 World Cup.

Dude, just shut up. What Lootifer and Pirlo said is correct. The local cup doesn't matter, the champions league and the local league are the ones who matter.

And the tournaments in the summer are National Teams tournaments. Only because something is different in the USA doesn't make it worse.

MLB has 15 games a day every fucking day. Some would say there are too many games. I for one love it, I schedule to record my team's game, and depending how am I doing in time at the end of the day I watch it, or watch bits, sometimes I just go to the 9th...

@AoG.. They are millions of people playing football (or soccer) in Europe (I mean the registered people.. not to mention the non-registered ones.) Soccer is probably the easiest sport to practice. All you need is a ball and a flat area; unlike baseball or such stuff which require too much and too expensive equipment. Europe is not like America. Europe consists of many independent countries with each one having its own domestic league and cup. The best of each of those countries compete for the UEFA Champions League every year. There confederations championships because it's unhealthy to gather national teams only once per 4 years to play the World Cup. Also, World Cup cannot be held more frequently because you have like 200 countries competing to qualify to finals. It's that simple.

clearly you dont understand how football works , how is there too many "cups", for domestic football there is 4 at most in many cases only 3 for most teams. lets take man utd an english club for example there is the premier league(20 team standard 38 game season) then the FA cup in which all 4 domestic leagues(PL ,league 1, 2 and conferance) compete and then there is the carling cup which is just a throw away tournament to most top teams who dont care at all about it. finally there is the champions league in which the top teams from european leagues come to compete against each other. the CL is the most prestigious competition and in many cases surpasses even the world cup as the greatest honour a play can have.

in international football there is 2 the world cup and european cup(for euro teams) which both happen every four years with 2 years apart from each other so they dont overlap. the world cup is more important but the euro's is still a high level of competition(watch a game an you'll see)
