They have no history, they stand for nothing other than "this team is famous because it won a lot 20 years ago" or "this team is famous because it has all the big stars now." Its entirely plastic, a show. It's what sports clubs were never meant to be.
Most soccer clubs have histories that make them more than just representative of their city (keep in mind, most cities in Europe have more than 3+ teams each, counting lower divisions). In Argentina, Boca attracts the poor fans of Buenos Aires while River Plate attracts the rich. The Pontics who were victims of genocide and population exchange in Turkey (such as my great-grandparents) started a club in the Greek city Thessaloniki and all Pontic Greeks in the world support this team, PAOK. In Spain, the supporters of the Franco regime became Real Madrid fans, while his opponents rallied around the pro-Catalan Barcelona. CSKA was (is?) the official club of the Soviet army.
What do the Miami Heat stand for? Or the Penguins? Or any other American team? Some teams get a great following because of people being proud of their city, but most teams in America have no real history other than "we play hockey and we're from Pittsburgh." That's why American pro team fans sit on their hands all game. Because what is there to support? You can't even use the "I'm proud of this city" angle, because you've chosen to support teams from all different cities, simply because they win. And what happens when they don't win? You'll notice the same isn't true for college sports (although no college team in the country comes close to that of fans from outside America).
What are you talking about?
I'll admit I'm not personally very passionate about professional sports. Really, the only time I've been superfluously passionate is when I, myself, am playing sports.
don't get me wrong, I care about my favorite sports teams, but if they lose than oh well, the other team was better than them.
I guess we're just at an impasse because we're demanding different things from sports. From what I gather, you want the competition to mean something ("What do the Miami Heat stand for?") while I, on the other hand, want to see the best possible competition. I am much more of a fan of sports in general than I am for the teams, which I think is pretty unique, so I won't get much support from other people, especially in this soccer thread.
The point I was making, which you got WAYYY off topic from, is that there are just too many god damn cups. I understand that some local clubs represent oppressed people, rich people, etc. But why the f*ck does there have to be 50,000 cups? What does it mean if Italy, who got ass-raped in the World Cup, beats Spain in the Euro Cup? Is that achievement as great, greater, less than or trivial than Spain winning the World Cup?
that's all I'm trying to say. I just think there are too many god damn soccer cups. It reminds me of college football bowls.
oh, and even though I should be rooting for Italy because one of my grandparents is Italian, I'll be rooting for Spain because of Italy beating France in the 2006 World Cup.
