Evolution is about creatures “evolving” to better integrate with the current environment.

Intelligence is about creatures getting the ability to overcome their own nature and artificially adapt to any environment.

One can argue that Intelligence is to Evolution as “The Mule” is to Asimov’s Psycho-History. Once a species develops intelligence, and indeed sentience, the whole argument of evolution cannot be applied to the species. If the environment changes, the species can directly adapt without changing genetic code. It can override the natural tendency for sub-species to self isolate from each other promoting species creation over time. It can, on its own, prevent the doomsday of its own success, a problem many non intelligent species simply lack.
