Definition of Music. rhythm, melody, harmony, and color, as you can see, are basically what makes music, music. Rap is lacking, severely, in this department.hecter wrote:ParadiceCity9 wrote:muy_thaiguy wrote:Exactly my point, though I DO like Classical and Country.Jamie wrote:muy_thaiguy wrote:Rock or Country.
Rap, for the most part, I just can't stand and I have to agree with Paradice on this one. Some of the older stuff is alright, but I just don't consider it music. Not that it isn't entertainment, I just don't see it as music.
I concur. Rap isn't music. I don't say that because I hate it. I actually like some of it. I HATE country, and classical, but I consider it music. I like rap more than country, and classical, but it just doesn't qualify as a musical art form. Rap is artistic, and creative, but the sound it produces has no musical qualities.
Finally people who don't shoot me down...
Ya, but you see, they're actually posting more than "Rap iz teh sux an iz naught muzik!!!11"
Now, you say it has no musical qualities, but what would you consider to be musical qualities? Some people do not consider modern art to be art (I myself do not consider many forms of Surrealism, nonrepresentational (NOT abstraction, there's a difference) or Dadaism to be art, but I have reasons). What do you think makes Rap a not-music?

Music, in it's most basic form, would not be rap though. It would be humming if anything. And yes, I know there is a difference between Mainstream and underground, and that is not what I am saying though. At the most, very, very little in harmonics and melodies, and in general, most do not have this. Rap is poetry (though some of the mainstream stuff should not be considered as such), but that's about as far as it will go.hecter wrote:muy_thaiguy wrote:Definition of Music. rhythm, melody, harmony, and color, as you can see, are basically what makes music, music. See, I'd have to disagree.
You have to understand that art reflects the society from which it came from. Looking back at things from the past, you can see that they began coming more and more complex. In the age of Mozart, people in painting tried to represent things as accurately as possible; as though it was a window the the real world. They became extremely complex and detailed. Something similar happened with music; large orchestras with complex sheet music all working in tune with each other. Now, moving along looking at painting, you get to present day and you see modern art (something like "Composition in Red Blue and Yellow", for example). This is art that is, in a sense, in it's purest form. Line, shape, colour, ect. It's there, it's just incredibly simplified. When you listen to rap music, you hear the beats being repeated (sometimes very basic, maybe only a couple notes) in a rhythmical way, creating harmony or melody (to some, at least). Of course, some rap songs can get a lot more complex, depending on where you look. Remember, there's a big difference between mainstream and underground.
Personally, I think there's a big difference between this and this.

I think Bluegrass is more of a sub-genre of Country.DaGip wrote:You didn't have BlueGrass...that is different from country. I enjoy listening to BlueGrass, it sounds real cool.
I also like listening to PowWow music.

Melody is a combination of notes, rapping just has people talking, sometimes a drum in thae background, and the rest tends to be computerized sounds. Metal, along with all other types of music, do have melody.Snorri1234 wrote:muy_thaiguy wrote:Music, in it's most basic form, would not be rap though. It would be humming if anything. But there is certainly rhythm and melody in rap. Without the underlying beat, it would be simple poetry, but the beat brings rhythm to it. Melody is just single tones in succesion, in that sense rap music has melody.
You could argue that it is less complex than other forms of music, but not that it isn't music. I mean, you don't see me arguing that metalbands are not music because there are huge orchestra that play way more complex music.

That psychological thing? To me, it doesn't really help that no one actually played anything during it, since there was no music to begin with in it (sorry, but little things like that don't work on me), I can't really consider it music.darvlay wrote:Question for MuyThai:
