Evolution

A scientific theory based on decades of observed fact, unlike Intelligent Design which has no observed fact. Evolution starts with the facts and then says "ok, what is the theory" while ID starts with the conclusion and then looks for facts to support the conclusion.

ID isn't science, it's theology, and forgive me if I don't believe we should be discussing theology in science class.

Sex Education

You do realize that sex is part of biology right? Kids will have sex whether you tell them to or not. That's how the species perpetuates itself. You might as well arm the kids with some basic knowledge and a means to keep themselves from getting pregnant and/or contracting disease. Staring a kid down and telling him that he shouldn't have sex won't work because you cannot defeat millions of years of reproductive instinct with a 2000 year old book.

Tolerance (same sex couples, marriage and lifestyle)

I thought Christianity taught tolerance, you know "love thy neighbor" and all that. Whatever happened to "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"?

Now if public schools would stop teaching these I wouldn't mind public schools (oh and the lack of high standards).

How can a public school talk about, condone, say "its ok" to things like same sex couples knowing that many religions teach that it is not ok?
So to arrive at a happy medium public schools should eleminate these topics from there curriculum. Either that or allow Creationism, Abstanance, and morality to be taught.

Public schools are not there to make sure little Johnny becomes a good Christian or follows good moral standards. Public schools are there to ensure that little Johnny can get into a university and pass a few standardized tests.

If you want little Johnny to live according to your religion's teachings and customs, then either put little Johnny in a private, religious school or take him to church on a regular basis.

Keep your religion out of public school, unless you want schools to teach about Jewish, Muslim, and Pagan religious teachings as well. Freedom of religion baby: you either allow all of them, or none of them. No one is allowed to pick and choose which religious groups get to sit at the table.

Religion is a private matter and doesn't belong in public schools.

Jay by your theory of prayer in schools then that means that rastas should be allowed to smoke because they only pray when they are high..

so that means there should be a weed break at school.

The point is... if the non-religious are offended by the religious and we will do everything from banning 10 commandments on courtroom walls to not allowing Bible studies in schools before class. Then why can the religious NOT be offended by the things the non-religious force upon us (as stated previously). Either make it so no one is "offended" (which is impossible) or stop filling lawsuits against people of faith.

BTW... I want Little Johnny not to be taught stuff that goes against HIS faith. Why not teach gambleing, how to roll a joint, how to shoplift without getting caught? Stick to the BASICS (math, history, science -exclude evolution, English)

You think banning a religious artifact in a secular courtroom is the same as banning intolerance?

There is nothing more than a superficial similarity. I see what you mean, but it is a very big stretch

In regards to the 10 commandments things, you would do well to find out why the supreme court actually ruled that way, rather than attribute it to someone being offended right away

Absolutely. Well put.

Sayign we should teach without evolution makes no sense. Evolution is a scientific theory, like relativity or quantum theory - and there is nothing discovered by biologists so far that does anything but support it as a hypothesis. The theory of gravity is also just that - a theory. Science's best guess. But should we stop teaching it for that reason?

Just a note.... when I was in school there was only one chapter that I didn't take notes during, didn't pay attention to the teachers lecture, didn't study the material and basically slept in class with my eyes open. Needless to say I scored low on the test for that chapter. (probably having something to do with my answers being somewhat sarcastic). The chapter? Evolution. And I refuse to let my kids sit there and be brain washed when its their turn.

Ok, I have a question for all of you.. but mostly Jay...

I live in Idaho where there is a huge mormon population. In our history books it teaches that the native americans probably came into america through the land bridge beringia. The book of mormon says that those people came from Israel. Do you believe that our history class, or even your sons teaches that to him. Or would you be ticked that a teacher is teaching him stuff that goes against his religion(even though its well within bounds of another)? Dont you agree it is best to leave religion to the churches, so it doesn't feel like anyone is trying to convert anyone?

lol.

Just don't stand in line for the next generation of anti-biotics if there is ever an outbreak of super-bacteria (i.e. bacteria that have evolved resistance to anti-biotics. And yes, this is evolution. You can't claim otherwise since you didn't even study  )

How surprising. Funny you should attempt to refute something you have obviously gone out of your way to learn nothing about.

What were you saying in earlier posts about not wearing a blindfold/blinders?

No, because the standards are too low. They push people right threw. I asked a girl one time she was in 10th grade, I asked her,"What country is north of the USA?" She didn't know. And we wonder why China will quickly overtake the US in just about all area's. We aren't doing what we should be in teaching our kids.

Adaptation is not evolution. Adaptation is the changing of characteristics of a species. (but it still remains THAT species) There is a species of fish that migrated into underwater caves which where pitch black. So over time they became blind (since they had no need for sight). Evolution is the changing from one species to a totally new species over a long period of time. Ape to man (Of which there is no evidence).
