I am in favor of using a user group for a closed forum, would make it easier not having to sift through the general threads and would counter the almost certain trolling it would receive.

Seriously guys, you don't need a private forum. There's already forum games. If the thread was subjected to trolling, then it would be dealt with by moderators accordingly.

That's kind of my thinking. I'm sure if it got bad enough people would report the posts.

Plus, if it's in a closed group then nobody else can read the story. Isn't that part of the point, to tell a story?

I would probably troll the thread but since I just announced it it wouldn't be funny so I won't.

Why don't we start a D&D thread only as a trap to troll the trolls?

OK, I'm game if you guys are.

If you're interested in GURPS fantasy, I can post some information and links to character building material. I'll probably run a GURPS adventure that has a mix of investigation, exploration, and combat. I'll start up an OOC threat to get things rolling, and when we're ready to play, I'll begin an IC thread with the actual action.

If GURPS is a no-go for you guys, I'd be willing to play, but I've only GMed GURPS and WEG Star Wars, so I'd be useless at D&D or any other system. =)

As long as I get to know what system we're using I'm fine. I can read up on any. I'm somewhat familiar with D&D 3.5 and VtM

Here's my thought...we have a volunteer DM with GURPS. We don't with anything else (I don't think).

Out of curiousity...what is it that you dislike about GURPS?

For character generation purposes, GURPS seems highly preferable.

It's not nearly as complicated as it may appear to someone who doesn't play a lot of live RPGs. It is more complicated than AD&D, but that's also what gives it more "life" (i.e. flexibility).

I don't know, I've never played a live RPG. I'm vaguely familiar with D&D/AD&D, but only from computer RPGs.

It does seem cool that you can adjust it for any scenario you would like. That could be fun, to do a live RPG set in the current world, or in the future, instead of a regular medieval setting.

I can't say for sure whether I'll take part or not. I would like to, but I'm not certain that I can dedicate the time necessary. Is it pretty intensive? Does it require lot's of time/dedication?

I wasn't referring to the flexibility of setting (although that's very much true of GURPS), but rather the tremendous flexibility of character creation, which simply doesn't exist in AD&D (at least up to 3rd edition, which I played).

In "the real world", it can be pretty time-intensive (when I played with a steady group, we usually met every other Saturday (and certainly no less than once per month) and played for most of the day). It's a great time-waster. But in the online games I've played, it doesn't take nearly that amount of time, for a couple of reasons, with the primary one being that people can send their moves to the Dungeon Master "when they're online", so we're all not necessarily online at the same time. Then over a given timeframe, the Dungeon Master "correlates" the moves and it's on to the next round.

OK, the game is up here: viewtopic.php?f=62&t=175278&start=0

Don't be dissuaded by character generation! I'm willing to help/do most of the work with your input. =)

In general, I'd say that character creation in GURPS is more intensive than D&D, but gamewise, they run about the same. I included some GURPS combat cards in the thread and a lowdown on combat, which will be the most technical that gameplay actually gets.

As far as a time commitment goes, I'd ideally like something between 2-5 posts per week. Combat will probably have 24 hour deadlines, but you can always leave advance instructions (kill all enemies, protect Player X, cast healing magic when necessary).
