Fact is, if you're a Christian, evidence indicates that masturbation is wrong. If you're an atheist, it's fine, because it doesn't hurt anyone and there's no god who knows what you do alone in your room anyways.

If you want to start another atheist vs. theist thread, go ahead, but that's not what this topic is about.

The point I have made is that on Christian grounds, masturbation is wrong. Nothing more.

If you feel a hanging guilt after for whatever reason, then do not masturbate, as it makes the experience un-enjoyable all-in-all. I feel no hanging guilt before, during and after masturbation and I find the whole experience to, generally, be an enjoyable one. Your religion should not dictate whether or not you're going to be able or allowed to beat one off every now and then, just whether or not you enjoy the whole of the experience.

The lust thing is where the trouble is. It's pretty clear that lust is sin, both from the OT, and from the words of Jesus. So masturbation in the most common sense, by oneself and looking at porn, would be sin, because there is certainly lust involved.

Mr. Nate summed it up nicely. Masturbation almost always involves lust, fantasizing, etc. That, and the arousal that comes from masturbation makes it far easier to give in to lust, even if you weren't necessarily fantasizing in the first place. Even if masturbation itself is not specifically mentioned as a sin in the Bible, it is either the natural product of a sin (lust, which Jesus called the equivalent of adultery) or can lead to the near occasion of that sin. Either way, it's something that is best avoided, difficult as it is- and it can certainly be argued that it's a sin in itself simply because it's either lustful or a direct link to lust. It's a struggle for most Christian young men I know to resist it, myself certainly included, but you're not alone, and it's entirely possible.

But what if you masturbating while fantasizing about the person you love (wife or girlfriend). Does that still make it wrong and an object of lust? As I have done that before, and will do again.

Lust is when you start thinking about the things you would do to/with a girl. And that's what generally accompanies masturbation. There's a very fine line between lust and appreciation of a woman's beauty, and unfortunately, we as men cross it way too often (again, myself included).

From the Christian perspective, there is no sin in seeing a naked woman if you see her and raise thanks to God for giving us so beautiful a companion. There is sin if you start thinking about what you would do with her if you had the chance. And that's masturbation for you. Face it- when you're masturbating while thinking of some girl, you're not seeing her as God's creation, you're visualizing something erotic. You're using her image as something to make you sexually excited. That's lust.

But once again, this is all from the Christian perspective. For this manner of debate to be valid, you have to believe in God in the first place, which is quite a different topic. This was just in answer to Hitman's questions regarding whether or not it was a sin in the Christian doctrine or not.

Actually, I would like to know this too... All you're doing is having your little gatherings in your own, PRIVATE forum and discussing common points of interest (in this case, it's your religion). You come into the public forums and give your biased point of view, but you state that it is in fact biased and it will not work for everybody. I, personally, as a hardcore atheist, have no problem with that. You are simply exercising your rights in a civilized manner. I see no problems with that.

well, according to the laws of nature, the reason orgasm is so enjoyable is because it is necessary to procreate. if reaching orgasm was painful, uncomfortable, or didn't feel THAT good at all, then why would we bother to procreate? only a few would, and then the population would shrink
