As I've pointed out earlier, we're still in Japan, and I'm sure we'll reach 100 years before pulling out. He doesn't mean we'd fight there for 100 years, even the neo-cons must recognize that that would be a lost cause. Personally the only good reason to pull out of Iraq at this point that I've heard is that the budget can't handle it. I hope we do at least reorganize our medical though, Medicare is dragging us only further into debt.

I found it quite funny (and depressing) to watch everyone splutter and gasp over something that some guys fucking pastor said. I suppose that as an athiest I can't really draw the connection, but let me ask you: Do you agree with everything your pastor says? If you answer yes I have next to no respect for you. That was the church that Obama grew up with, and his pastor was likely his father figure throughout a good deal of his life. The fact that he stuck with him for so long despite the potential risks of doing so says mountains more than if he had thrown him on the wayside as soon as things got tough. Hell, I wouldn't vote for someone whose personal ties have that little substance, it indicates to me that they care about nothing but power. The same goes for that racist preacher that endorsed McCain. Who cares? Jesus, let me break this down. If you're looking at a candidate, you should look at one of two things. First off, examine their policies. Second, examine their personal character. What you don't do is look at people vaguely connected to them, dig out their personal history, and smear their name. That sort of politics is disgusting and should be reserved for the sort of people that give half a shit about what Britney Spears is doing. I have some qualms about Obama's policies, but I have so far seen no reason to distrust his character.

This thread was won right here. If Obama has ditched his preacher at the first whispers, he woudl have been labelled fickle by the same people attacking him in this thread. Like firg said, strength of character. We'll see how he does in the election campaign.

different strokes for different folks. It is true to say that some will not vote for Obama because of his color. There are others that are loyal to the Clintons that is another reason.

patriotism is what you make of it. I for one love my country. I can't even begin to think of any other place I'd rather be.

I don't want to sound uncharitable, but where does your opposition to universal healthcare tally with this caring, sharing thing?
What about the people who have lost hope because their health insurance premiums are too high cos they're too ill? Or who can't get insurance at all, because of a pre-exisiting condition? or who are keeping a family together and can't afford to prioritise their own health?
