Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Postby safariguy5 on Tue Apr 13, 2010 12:08 am

Anybody watch this show? My roommate got me to watch it with him online, and I have to say, it's turned into my guilty pleasure. It's like the plot of Gladiator with the effects of 300. Definitely NSFW stuff as the Romans were quite carnal people apparently. Started off pretty slow, but it got VERY good in the last 3-4 episodes.

Thoughts/Comments?

Sir,

1) It seems like every character I like, dies or close to it (hot blonde girl that gets her face smashed in, Varro, Naevia)
2) It's pretty exciting plot-wise, but sometimes the cheesiness of some the action scenes are kinda annoying, while others are rather awesome. I wish they'd do away with the "worse than Kill Bill" style blood though.
3) It's pretty much ritual to watch it with the rest of my floor when were done with classes on Fridays, can't wait.

Sir.

The blood is just too bad for me to take it seriously. Beyond that the plot seems decent at least, and the producers make up for the lack of decent cg with a frickin metric ton of NSFW.

Just like the 300, it's much too GAY! for me. I mean really, it's all about half-naked men with 6 packs. 6 packs were meant to be carried and drunk.

I'd rather watch sexy bi-sexual women fighting each other.

The hot blonde's name was Licinia (sp?). The Varro death was unexpected, I thought they were going to keep him around longer. I really enjoy the character development though. I thought Batiartus started out ok, then got worse, then got better, and is now an ass again. His wife was always pretty manipulative. You are right about the blood and action scenes though...the decapitations always end up looking like the one in 300, not quite real enough...

As an am critic, I think It's kinda just an alright series. So far the only real highlight I can think of was getting to see Xena's giant nipples (high five OT!) . Really none of the characters really jump out at me. Though I don't think it's all of the actors faults per say.

Yeah, they were like thumbs or something. I was blown away... I used to watch Xena as a kid and I was heartbroken when she never tap-ed that fine ass Gabriel in the season finale. This definitely made up for it.

Finale = amazing

I'm glad to see a bunch of people dead, especially the Magistrate's son (nobody, and I mean NOBODY, kills Varro and gets away with it!).

Can't wait for the next season. =S

There's so much backstabbing going on in this series that I wonder how Romans got anything done in the first place...

According to Plutarch, Spartacus made a bargain with Cilician pirates to transport him and some 2,000 of his men to Sicily, where he intended to incite a slave revolt and gather reinforcements. However, he was betrayed by the pirates, who took payment and then abandoned the rebel slaves.[34] Minor sources mention that there were some attempts at raft and shipbuilding by the rebels as a means to escape, but that Crassus took unspecified measures to ensure the rebels could not cross to Sicily, and their efforts were abandoned.[35] Spartacus' forces then retreated toward Rhegium. Crassus' legions followed and upon arrival built fortifications across the isthmus at Rhegium, despite harassing raids from the rebel slaves. The rebels were now under siege and cut off from their supplies.[36]

At this time, the legions of Pompey returned from Spain and were ordered by the Senate to head south to aid Crassus.[37] While Crassus feared that Pompey's arrival would cost him the credit, Spartacus unsuccessfully tried to reach an agreement with Crassus.[38] When Crassus refused, a portion of Spartacus' forces fled toward the mountains west of Petelia (modern Strongoli) in Bruttium, with Crassus' legions in pursuit.[39] When the legions managed to catch a portion of the rebels separated from the main army,[40] discipline among Spartacus' forces broke down as small groups were independently attacking the oncoming legions.[41] Spartacus now turned his forces around and brought his entire strength to bear on the legions in a last stand, in which the slaves were routed completely, with the vast majority of them being killed on the battlefield.[42]

The final battle that saw the defeat and death of Spartacus in 71 BCE took place on the present territory of Senerchia on the right bank of the river Sele in the area that includes the border with Oliveto Citra up to those of Calabritto, near the village of Quaglietta, in High Sele Valley, which at that time was part of Lucania. In this area, in the past decades, there have been finds of armor and swords of the Roman era.
The eventual fate of Spartacus himself is unknown, as his body was never found, but he is accounted by historians to have perished in battle along with his men.[43] Six thousand survivors of the revolt captured by the legions of Crassus were crucified, lining the Appian Way from Rome to Capua.[44]

not reading that

I already learned my lesson though. I read the real history of Spartacus midway through the second season on Wikipedia so it kind of ruined the season finale.
