It depends whether the victim wants to live or not. I mean, if the victim has a really horrible life and thon suffers horrible pains like 24/7 all the time, then killing probably wouldn't seem so bad.

Details are important. The people involved matter.

A tortured death is probably among most people's worst night mares, but a quick death might not be even difficult for the person involved, (depending on your religious views) per se by the person involved, particularly if it comes without warning. IN many ways, the greatest harm in death is more to those who survive.

On the other hand, a woman raped in many cultures, finds here life at virtual end, ruined. Men who are raped may fare even worse. Even in the US, there can be stigma attached to someone who is raped, particularly if male. Beyond that, the way the rape happens and the personality of the woman/man involved determine the impact it will have. For some people, the impact will last a lifetime, even drive someone to suicide. Other people can overcome extreme difficult and even wind up stronger, in some ways perhaps "better" people.

If you are talking about taking and keeping a child, I would absolutely put it up there, because you are inherently harming a child and the parents for life. A child who is just "missing" cannot even be grieved like a child known to be dead.

If, however, you are talking about the more classic taking an adult, holding them for ransom, then if they are not also raped or murdered/tortured, it depends heavily on the length of time involved as well as the basic treatment the kidnapped recieve.

There is no doubt rape is terrible and has a horrific mental effect lasting an entire persons life but that person is still capable of falling in love, of having fun and eventually maybe even being happy with their life. It is a terrible thing for anyone to suffer, but to say it is worse than death to me belittles the inner strength that so many women (and men) show in the way they live their lives after such events.

But that depends highly on the individual. Many women (and men) commit suicide post rape. In that case, there might not be much distinction. Also, it matters whether you think death is the ultimate end or just another stage in life (a religious question).

Morocco's penal code allows a rapist to marry his victim if she is a minor as a way of avoiding prosecution.

A 16-year-old girl, Amina Filali, killed herself a week ago after being severely beaten during a forced marriage to her rapist.

The protesters held signs saying, "The law has killed Amina".

The parents of Amina Filali were at the protest, says the BBC's Nora Fakim, in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.

They say their daughter was pressured by a local court into marrying her rapist, who then abused her.

She died after swallowing rat poison on 10 March.
