So they're trading one addictive carcinogen for another addictive carcinogen. Where is the good news?

Yeah, I'm not so sure getting "high" is better than smoking a cigarette. As a high school teacher myself, I've seen a few students that you just know smoke far too much pot - and it shows not only in their behavior in class, but their grades and relationships, as well.

yea, I thought inhaling any smoke, regardless if it's tobacco or pot, gives greater chances for lung cancer. I could be wrong though because it seems like, similar to cigarettes, everyone on the fucking internet seems to lie about this, whether it be pro-pot or anti-pot.

I do have personal anecdotes that pot sucks ass though (no, I haven't smoked pot), so I'm not super excited.

They also found cancer-causing chemicals in cannabis smoke in amounts 50% higher than those found in tobacco smoke. The researchers even observed that light cannabis use could possibly prove to be even more damaging because cannabis smokers usually inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers.

Finally, the smoking of three to four cannabis cigarettes a day was found to be associated with the same degree of damage to tissue in the airways of the lung as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day.

So it contains 50% more carcinogens and use patterns indicate people inhale it more deeply yet 3 joints = 20 cigarettes? How does that work?

Also, who the f*ck smokes 3-4 joints a day?

From the same site:
It is difficult to ascertain whether or not the inhalation of cannabis smoke causes damage to the lungs and airways independently of the tobacco smoke or not. In general, the studies indicate that there is an increased negative health impact on those who do not smoke cannabis compared to those who do not smoke at all

Anyway, here's 2 actual research papers for you:
Cannabis and tobacco smoke are not equally carcinogenic
Heavy habitual marijuana smoking does not cause an accelerated decline in FEV1 with age.

Also:

On 23 May 2006, Donald Tashkin, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles announced that the use of cannabis does not appear to increase the risk of developing lung cancer, or increase the risk of head and neck cancers, such as cancer of the tongue, mouth, throat, or esophagus.[15] The study involved 2252 participants, with some of the most chronic marijuana smokers having smoked over 22,000 marijuana cigarettes.[15][16][17][18] The finding of Donald Tashkin, M.D., and his team of researchers in 2006 refined their earlier studies published in a Dec. 17th 2000 edition of the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarker and Prevention.[19] Many opponents of marijuana incorrectly cite the original finding of UCLA Medical Center from 2000 as "proof" that marijuana leaves the users at higher risk for cancer of the lung, and cancerous tumors,[13] even though the researchers at the UCLA Medical Center have revised their finding with a more in-depth study on the effects of the use of marijuana. This seemed to contradict assumptions made after some studies, like those from Dale Gieringer et al., which found that 118 carcinogens were produced when marijuana underwent combustion, and two carcinogens {2-Methyl-2, 4(2H-1-benzopyran-5-ol) & 5-[Acetyl benz[e]azulene-3,8-dione} formed when marijuana underwent vaporization with the Volcano Vaporizer.[20][21] To help explain this seemingly chemical proof of carcinogenicity inherent in the process of combustion, Tashkin noted that "one possible explanation for the new findings, he said, is that THC, a chemical in marijuana smoke, may encourage aging cells to die earlier and therefore be less likely to undergo cancerous transformation."[15]

And, as Timminz says, good luck proving pot is physically addictive.

Yep excessive use of pot is bad, in the way that excessive use of alcohol and tobacco and cheeseburgers are all bad(though pot probably has the least long term physical effect out of all of those).

If somebody feels the need to escape reality through abuse of one thing or another the problem lies with them, not with their drug of choice

However, tobacco is more harmful than pot, probably more addictive, and just crappier in general.

Yeah, there's probably some extra risks when comparing to non-smokers. Less so than tobacco though (also, it would be difficult to smoke pot in the quantities that some tobacco smokers consume)

And yeah, sure, there's plenty of idiots who smoke pot. Then there's also george carlin and the likes.

Anyway, yes, inhaling smoke from any organic substance does some harm. Comparatively, though, marijuana does far less harm than cigarettes. THC itself is not carcinogenic, and store bought cigs have tons of additives. I remember reading somewhere that U.S. tobacco crops have lots of radiation.

Also, pretty sure weed doesn't have quite the same effect on your cardiovascular system that tobacco does, i.e. cigs are a major contributor to atherosclerosis and the like.

Cannabis actually contains some anti-carcinogenic substances, and THC itself may be one of them.

Of course any benefit received from them is probably negated if you use your cannabis by smoking. Vapourization or eating are much more healthy alternatives.

Also, the whole "cannabis has more carcinogens/tar/whatever than tobacco" thing has been thoroughly debunked ages ago, if I recall it turned out they only studied the leaves of the plant or something.

However, cannabis is a drug like any other (even though it's quite harmless relatively speaking) and it should be used in moderation.

True, in fact it's exactly opposite IIRC - cannabis is a vasodilator (although a mild one) while tobacco is a vasoconstrictor.

It's beyond me why pot is illegal. I don't smoke nor would I want any close friends/family members smoking, but there's no point in why it should be illegal.

There's no point in any drugs being illegal, at least in the sense that people who are using them are being punished for it.

Then again, the biggest anti-drug people are also the same people who "disagree" with homosexual lifestyles (whatever that means...it's still beyond me how someone can disagree with a lifestyle choice that has no affect on their own), so I wouldn't put it past them.
