Cyborg America: inside the strange new world of basement body hackers

Pretty amazing read.

A very small excerpt:

Neil Harbisson was born with a condition that allows him to see only in black and white. He became interested in cybernetics, and eventually began wearing the Eyeborg, a head-mounted camera which translated colors into vibrations that Harbisson could hear. The addition of the Eyeborg to his passport has led some to dub him the first cyborg officially recognized by the federal government. He now plans to extend and improve this cybernetic synesthesia by having the Eyeborg permanently surgically attached to his skull.

Getting a medical team to help him was no easy task. "Their position was that 'doctors usually repair or fix humans' and that my operation was not about fixing nor repairing myself but about creating a new sense: the perception of visual elements via bone-conducted sounds," Harbisson told me by email. "The other main issue was that the operation would allow me to perceive outside the ability of human vision and human hearing (hearing via the bone allows you to hear a wider range of sounds, from infrasounds to ultrasounds, and some lenses can detect ultraviolets and infrareds). It took me over a year to convince them."

And an earth magnet inserted under your skin, apparently. Still, kind of cool.

I wouldn't say it's totally unprecedented, they fit defibrulators inside people all the time now, that gives you the cyborg ability to reset you heart if you ever have a heart attack - something the body couldn't do all on it's own either.

*gets out William Gibson books and starts looking for nice cyber-gadgets that I might find handy*

Definitely not unprecedented. To a certain extent, even a hip replacement could be said to make someone a cyborg. What interested me about the article was that it suggested a bunch of ways in which people could do more than a "normal" human.

Wish I could find the posts in another thread somewhere about the mesh tube with the wire around it that can change shape. If we could somehow fit a neural interface on that the possibilities start expanding, tho you'd have to guess it would be the porn industry (as usual) that would pioneer that particular field of cybernetics - prehensile you say? interesting...

The dude from Reading Uni has something similar set up in the article- implants in his arm that let him know when someone is taking his wife's hand, even half way around the world when it's connected.

That basically constitutes a nervous interface, and I guess a neural one at a basic level.

Expand it to the whole body and things get interesting. But if two people have been enhanced in that manner and they have sex, is it really just fancy masturbation since they feel what they're doing to each other?

Possibly, though I see no downside to two people being engaged in fancy masturbation.
