For example, imagine Sarah Palin went on the Jay Leno show, and when Palin was asked if she knew what the national debt was, and she replied "I don't know....2 trillion?", the next day, the media would be all over it, and labeling Palin "unelectable" and a complete dumbass. It would play 24-7, to the point of it being impossible to not hear about how Palin is a hypocrite because she want's to reduce the debt, but has no idea how much the debt is.
Does anyone disagree if that happened, it would turn Palin into an even bigger joke and a ditz?

LIAR!
Sara Palin never said any such thing.

Tina fey then parodied it with the famous "I can see alaska from my house"
at least I'm pretty sure that's how it went down.

That's exactly how it went down. Palin never said "I can see Russia from my house!" and was said by Tina Fey playing Palin.
