I hear three different pronunciations at times in America at least, all seem equally common (as in, as often as people use the word "gala", which is almost never). I've only heard the former when referring to apple however.

Well linguistically the sound for h is just voiceless noise.... So the correct way to pronounce it is almost like you are trying to fog up your glasses with your breath. Or just breathing heavily. If you want the technical terms its a voiceless glottal fricative
