New Look uses prices to shame fat people

Postby mrswdk on Tue May 15, 2018 9:31 am

Bully fat shamers at retailer New Look have been caught out charging fat people more for their clothes, in a disgusting Abercombie-esque piece of fatist elitism:

Fashion chain New Look is reviewing its prices after an outcry that some larger-sized clothes were more expensive than those in smaller sizes.

The High Street retailer said it was hoping to "ensure pricing differences like these" did not happen in future.

It comes after a shopper saw trousers in its Curves range cost 15% more than a pair in the main collection.

why shouldn't they cost more? there is more material in them and, they would take longer to make. seems fair to me...*shrugs*

ok, let's look at it this way : you are at the movies and are thinking of purchasing a thirst quenching carbonated beverage - an 8 oz. small costs $4, a $12 oz. medium costs $5 & and a 16 oz. large will run you $6. in this particular scenario, it would seem that the gluttons are getting better vfm, no? only in 'murica would someone whine about the OP...

I don't get it. Oversized clothing has always cost more, at least since the point where I started needing it. Bizarre that someone would think this is a new concept.

Same jacket:

If there was ever a time when it wasn't like this, I don't remember it, and I'm older than most of you, so if I don't remember it, it was a very long time ago.

Isn't it common in China and pretty much all east Asian countries to call people fatty like it's a regular descriptor?

Calling or referring to someone as 'thin' or 'fat', or whatever, is generally more acceptable in China (I don't know about Korea or Japan). I don't know how it is for chubby folks but in China I might often get middle age/old people tell me over dinner that I'm thin and need to eat more. Commenting on someone's weight is probably going to be seen as you looking out for the fat/thin person rather than trying to insult them.

That said, a lot of that is down to language differences. In English you have all sorts of different words (fat, chubby, porky, overweight etc.) and you'd choose which word you use depending on the situation, because some are more negative than others. In America you could probably tell your partner they were putting on weight without necessarily offending them. Whereas in Chinese you have one word (pang) that is used to mean all of those things, so the subtext and meaning of it varies depending on the context in which you say it. Sometimes it will be fine, sometimes it will still be rude.

It's just a weird cultural quirk, like how Americans and Chinese both think asking acquaintances about their salary is okay whereas in the UK that's unthinkably rude. The only solution to make all people live together in harmony is to destroy all culture and rid the world of these hangups and outrages forever. Mao was right.

This was what I thought, but I know a few people who are buyers for major chains:

1) The manufacturing cost difference is basically non-existent- sewing two big pieces together costs the same as sewing two small pieces together.
2) The material is dirt cheap if it's just cotton or nylon, or whatever.
3) Shipping it is also really cheap, and basically not included in the price.

Basically, the real reason why the chains were charging more was because they could. There weren't a lot of other alternatives.

You mean, you just Googled it.

Incidentally, I once heard that some of the clothes in Topshop and Primark are actually the same garments, the only difference being which shop stuck the label inside it.
