a question to the atheists out there

Postby brooksieb on Wed Feb 06, 2008 12:59 pm

I've seen alot of threads bashing christians so I'd thought i'd make my own, to say that, for example if you were back in D-day and you were a atheist, you were in one of the landing boats and you were in the front line, bullets and bombs flying everywhere, wud you say "oh please god, save me so i'll get out of here in 1 piece" and i know that i met get a bit of a bashing but think about that. i do not want people saying oh gods fake, or i wudnt do that because i dont believe in god (you can make another thread or discuss that in another thread), because at the end of the day ur just giving atheism a bad name. So i want a decent awnser in your own interpretation.

In genuine puzzlement, why would an atheist be praying to god?

Actually/
i don't care. At all.

Do you think all the Christian's were praying for someone to save them? I'm pretty sure quite a few of them knew they were fighting for a good cause, and would lay their life down for it.

You know what would save me in that situation? Superman. I think I would probably pray for superman. Or maybe Batfink.

How would praying to a deity that, to atheists, does not exist allow you to live or even give them succor for the hardships that they experiencing?

Even by your logic, wouldn't a loving god not allow his children to be storming Normandy beach in the first place? Why would he put them in danger in the first place? And how would prayer, in that horrible situation, save you over a Christian that does not pray or an atheist who does not believe?

so you are saying that atheists are prone, in times of absolute terror, to invent a belief in god?

Well of course it is possible but what are you trying to prove by saying this?

That Theists are weaker; not strong enough to cope with life without fostering their 'faith' in a god?

If not what are you trying to find our please?

If i had been on D-Day, i would have tried anything. I'm an agnostic, but the level of fear would have been so great that I'm sure i would have asked for divine protection.
Its not a rational thing, its emotional.
Let us pray.

You make a good point. However I counter that with what someone said earlier. I can imagine that an atheist would sooner pray to Superman or to spider-man to save them, simply because Superman is more real to them then a far away deity that means nothing to them.

How many people has Superman saved? hundreds of thousands if not more... Can Jesus leap tall building in a single bound?

I believe that Atheists can be considered more humanist and believe in the works of man far more than the work of Nature... An atheist would feel more succor by calling out to his Sergeant or Colonel to save them, then to someone whom they do know or love e.g. Jesus, Zeus et al.

well i dont know what god is thinking maybe he is trying to teach us a lesson in the 1st place we're not controlled by god in my view, we make these choices and if we fail we fail if we pass we pass maybe this story might help

BROOKSIE 9:63

A nun said to god in her prayers "please god i wud like to win the lottery so i cud feed all these poor people", so after a few days she said "god you are not awnsering my prayers, if you were a loving god then you will awnser my prayers" god then replied said "you have not baught a ticket, meet me half way"

Once again, good point. However you didn't answer my question... I beleive that the fundimental theroy of Christianity is that Jesus loves everyone... Now with that taken as fact, why would the Lord save some one who prays over some one who didn't?

Now, following that logic, how does he save an American soldier on Utah beach and the German soldier who prays just as much when they are in each others sights?

The Flash can walk on water and Dr. Strange can make dreams come true.

god is closer than you think

Very true, however Atheists do not believe this. I think that what is difficult for you is that you cannot put yourself in the shoes of an atheist. They do not feel the powerful love of God in their everyday life. I imagine that you walk around with a coat made of God's love.

Imagine your life were you do "know" god. Why would people that do not feel this way call out for the Lord?

Imagine, even, that you mildly despise the notion. And that performing said call-out would compromise your personal integrity. It might be analogous to a Christian calling out to Ares to be saved.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you are saying that all of the people that died in combat could have been saved if they had prayed?

You cant underestimate the power of what you learn or even just hear when you are very small. I went to a church of england school, so that is probably why i would shout out "O God" has opposed to "Oh Spidey" thogh i agree Spidey ROCKS DA HOUSE.
Plus, some of it is just linguistic-God is a very common word, spidey less so.

I wish I was spidey 8)

I hear people shout "O God" quite a bit, but never in a battlefield situation.

well i dont walk around thinking that my coat is made of gods love, after all it's just material made by someone else, i believe god provided the materials however, god did not make the coat.

again i do not know the second question you've asked me i believe in free choice and if u dont want to think god is there u can think god is not there, however sometimes people try new things in desperation for example the roman army were loosing all there battles, the centurian talked to the monk and the monk said "paint a cross on your shield, you will win this if you paint a cross on your shield" so the romans done that out of desperation and they won the battle, the monk told them to keep doing that and eventually the romans abandoned their beliefs and turned to christianity, or on a reverse note a christian can stop believing in god if that person feels that god is not listening to them, if you understand.

Exactly. To paraphrase Bill Hicks, when you are shagging it would be a bit weird to shout out "RANDOM COLLISION OF PARTICLES" or "QUANTUM",
Oh God is just easier. It means nothing.
