For quick notes - pen

For large projects - keyboard

For sketching - charcoal pencil

i would've included the option "my school/family cannot afford any of the above" but i know how badly useless options in polls skew the results here.

The overwhelming majority of the writing I do is on the keyboard. Unless I'm jotting down a note to stick to my computer or when I'm in a non-computer lab course at school.

Pens are the best for taking notes in a book, mostly because there's no carbon transfer between the pages.

I like the Bic pens that are clear so you can see how much ink is left. That way you can plan to get a new pen when the other starts to die. There's nothing worse than having a pen die in the middle of taking notes in history class.
