Oh I know bad title for this topic, anyhow.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4676632.stm

That is just pathetic, I want to express whatever I want then if it annoys someone else I don't give a damn. Maybe not the right thing is to shout "allah is gay" in front of a muslim is the best thing to do, but seriously some friggin cartoons in a newspaper?

And now I heard Sudan is going to boycott danish goods, let me get this straight, "we" as in scandinavia aren't the ones needing "more" money. Why would anybody refuse to buy/get good scandinavium goods? That's just foolish.

Don't get me wrong, I have no intentions on saying I have no respect for the muslims and their religion. I have the same respect as I have for all religions.

If the Sudanese want to boycott anything, let them. It's not like your economy will collapse as a result.

I, personally, think it is bullshit. Imagine if there were riots all over the US every time an American flag is burned in another country. Imagine if all the Christians in the world rioted every time a cross was burned. What if all the Hindus started beating the crap out of each other every time we eat beef. These people need to get a fukkin' grip. I used to strenuously object to generalizations about Islam, but stuff like this makes it very difficult to not view Muslim culture as barbaric. (There have been lots of other good examples lately, too, before people crucify me...like the saudi woman who was raped by 14 men and sentenced to being whipped 200 times for it, or arguments by Egyptian biochemists that there is factual evidence which proves that evolution is wrong and that the factual evidence is 'the Koran says so'...don't get me started.)

The point is the boycott has come and gone and it was all irrelevant. Every single detail of this issue. The only thing to learn from this is that some Muslims REALLY love their Allah. Just like a lot of blacks don't like to be called the n-word. Nothing shocking.

It's new news today because the paper that printed it originally reprinted it today as a sign of solidarity for the guy who drew the cartoon....so now they're rioting again.

What is a boycott other than just a peaceful form of protest?

A riot on the other hand...

It's strange though how other blacks call eachother "niggers". Just like in Sweden we can't call the immigrants "blatte" but they call eachother that. Speak about double morale.

First, I think you mean 'double standard'. Second, as I see it, it's more of trying to take the power away from a word by changing its usage and connotation, and, in a way trivializing its old meaning.
It's like if someone called you 'Shithead'. You could get all offended, and cry in a corner, or you could adopt it as your own. As soon as you start using it as a title, it loses a lot of the strength it had as an insult, becomes your word instead of theirs.
Now, however, most people see a white person calling a black person a n****r, they assume racism. It may not have been intended, but that connotation remains. It's not some conspiracy to piss off the white man, like you think the whole 'Equal Opportunity' hiring thing is. It's just how events have unfolded. Be content using words that don't construe racism. Show people respect.

The thing you're missing in your apparent ignorance is the difference in culture.

Try to imagine if you can that you have something that you care deeply about, that basically takes your soul (A spouse or son/daughter perhaps). Now try to imagine if someone were to take that thing that you care about so much and do one of the most horrible things that could possibly be done to that thing.

To millions of Muslims, Muhammad is that something they care about, and depicting him in any way, especially in a satirical way, is the worst thing you could do to him, short of outright saying that he's a false prophet.

Maybe now you can understand why Muslims were rioting over these cartoons. And if you can't, then I have no respect for your intellect.

To millions of Westerners, Free Speech is that something they care about, and demanding that it stop in any way, especially in a violent way, is the worst thing you could do to them, short of outright blowing up their buildings with planes.

Maybe now you can understand why Westerners were outraged over the reactions to these cartoons. And if you can't, then I have no respect for your intellect.

I heard about that first one you mentioned. I don't care what you believe, barbarism is barbarism; she gets raped by 14 men and SHE gets the whip?! Islam, as practiced in the vast majority of the world, is not the 'religion of peace' touted by politicians and apologists in the western nations. Look no further than incidents like this in countries where Islam is nearly the state-supported religion and you'll see these sorts of things happen in atrocious numbers.

My gut feeling is the vast majority of Muslims DO NOT live under Shariah law so your statement is completely wrong, of course I will be happy to be proved incorrect if you have any evidence to back your claim.

To get this halfway back on track again and maybe being able to add some facts.

Those cartoons were published, and nothing much happened, after quite a long time, 2 months or so if I remember correctly, the unrest in Islamic countries in the Middle East and Africa flared up. Information about the cartoons had been circulated during that time, including two pictures that had never been published in Jyllands-Posten, one was of a bearded french guy participating in a pig-squealing contest who was wearing a fake pigs snout. Completely unrelated to political cartoons, but because it was presented with the rest of them it became extremely offensive.

Embassies were attacked, people were hurt, debate ensued, things calmed down, noone gave a shit about it.

Now, I'm not a fan of conspiracy theories, but here it really looks like some people saw a chance and took it in the hope of, well, whatever. Creating tension between Europe and Islamic countries? Because they needed an ego-trip?

Look no further than Hindu-majority parts of India for atrocious things regarding all the shock-nouns like Rape or Torture. Is Hinduism an atrocious religion? Until change was imposed on them by the colonial government, a higher-caste tradition (almost requirement) in some areas was to marry and take a girls virginity before she reached puberty and became impure. Is that religious? Or do people such as yourself betray their natural ethnocentric religious bias and completely ignore the level of development in such cases?

Then, we can add in to the mix the level of religious tension ratcheted up by the polarised rhetoric of the War on Terror and the right wing elements of the media and are you at all surprised?

Again, this is another culture issue. Yes it seems utterly wrong and barbaric -- to us. To them it seems just as barbaric to let our women "parade" around town, hold public office, etc. But that's just their culture. It's not right to us, but it's right to them, and who are we to say that all of the sudden Western culture and morals are the only true morals in the world. The last time that happened, an age of imperial colonialism ensued and the major impact of that through our times is the present state of Africa. Completely fucked up.
