... and was completely unaware that Al Jazeera was a legitimate news agency. I don't even watch Foxnews and was apparently mislead into thinking it was part of a terrorist organization... I wish I had found this out before I had to do some research for an assignment during my senior year of college... So this is a Public Service Announcement for all my news-ignorant comrades: Al Jazeera is a legitimate news source. Also, it is a bit more aesthetically pleasing and easier to maneuver (manoeuvre) around than even the BBC site, in my opinion.

Why the f*ck don't you people tell me these things?

But you don't live in Europe, so I guess you might be excused.

Well they're definately legitimate, running from the UAE, Malaysia and England (UK if you like) but i think there reportings are one side more than the other, like sticking on the sides of the islamic countries, unlike ever sticking to the west's side or standing neutral very much like the Beeb do. (most of the time anyway)

Well, from what I can tell it is supposed to be localized for the Middle East. Also they appear to be fairly objective, and I was told that it was formed by a bunch of old BBCers. So that should count for something.

Brooksieb, go and pray for forgiveness for that whopper!!

Auntie Beeb has become the most awful left wing claptrap reporting I have ever seen, their hand wringing makes me, quite frankly, puke. Their constant harping and whining makes one cringe in the chair. The days when one could rely on an unbiased view from them have long since dissapeared. They even had to have their knuckles rapped not so long ago because it was becoming so bloody obvious and causing so many complaints even Ofcom had to be dragged into dealing with them.

Fair and honest...the beeb...dream on my friend.

So what is your news source of choice, sir?

I think the main problem is that when I'm watching an American news channel, it shows videos of terrorists saying this and terrorists saying that and whatnot and the source cited is always Al Jazeera. When that's the only thing they are cited for, it leaves a bit of a negative impression.

The internet.

If I find a story I want to know more about (which, I have to admit, covers nearly everything I read such is my mind) I research it on this wild west of information. I can get every angle, every opinion, every thought there is. From all this I can distill my view and personal opinion.

As I said to a friend of mine when the net really took off some years back "The genie is out of the bottle old chap, thank goodness, and they will never ever get it back in"

Well, yes, that is the best way to do it. But where do you go first? What is your initial source?

AJ is definitely not as bad as many western new agencies make it out to be, but I think "objective" is a bit of an over correction.

Granted that it is almost impossible for any journalistic endeavor to remain objective all the time, AJ has no problem wading sack-deep into the speculation pool when a political or religiously charged event takes place.

The two things that AJ does do better than anyone else IMO are:

1. Publicly correcting their mistakes
2. Truly in-depth and comprehensive reporting on issues in the middle east.

If you spend much time on AJ you will start to see just how carefully they do insert bias into their reporting.

Al jaz usually strikes me as what would happen if, say, the mail became the reputable news source of a country. Not necessarily untrue but almost certainly biased.
