E3 2008

Thoughts on E3 2008?

So far I'm underwhelmed.

Announcement of FFXIII for Xbox was amusing in terms of fanboy reaction 1, 2, 3, but overall the microsoft conference left me thinking where are the new games?

Nintendo's conference was a kick in the balls for core gamers. Cammie Dunaway is annoying as hell.

Sony probably had the best conference, but didn't really impress either. MAG sounds interesting. They didn't make up for the FFXIII announcement though.

In conclusion, gaming is dead.

I don't know about dead, but the next year or so should be interesting.

No, there really hasn't been much going on this year. G4 switched to digital in my area this week (of all weeks), so I couldn't watch the coverage. Animal Crossing: City Folk looks promising, but that still isn't that much. No big shocks this year.

LOL at Sony losing more exclusives. The only reason the PS3 is selling is because of its Blu-ray player. Even then, the future's bleak.

I dunno, I think Sony still has some brand loyalty left, they just need to get that price down. Little Big Planet looks amazing but I wonder if it'll have lasting appeal. And the Resistance Trailer was pretty cool looking, something about fighting godzilla sized monsters appeals to me.

I wouldn't write off Sony just yet, PS3 is doing Ok in Europe and Japan.

Wii music was really disappointing.

I, personally, don't think "OK in Europe and Japan" is enough to balance their lackluster sales in the States. Especially since the Wii is outselling it at about 2:1 in most regions and the 360 doing the same except in Japan, and I don't think Microsoft even tries over there.

You'd think with Koji Kondo involved,Wii Music would be great. But I suppose that has nothing to do with gameplay. We'll see how it pans out.

Well PS3 and 360 are about 1 to 1 in Europe. I have a feeling playstation will recover for some reason, if only because I know a lot of PS1/2 owners who have yet to buy a next gen console. I figure they're holding out for PS3.

That said Microsoft have done good work this week to ensure it doesn't happen.

E3 has left me feeling tired of gaming. It's all FPS and casual games.

Where is Zelda Ocarina of Time!?!?!

But seriously I don't know anything about E3 except what is generally is. Gaming wise, I'm going to get Call of Duty World at War and expect to be the one smug kid who said it would be better than everyone thinks. I think its funny about the Brett Favre business because the 20th edition Madden is going to be gay since he'll be on a different team. Fallout 3 looks like it will be awesome.

Fair enough. You're right though. Not much in that bunch that appeals to me, and I think we knew a lot of it was coming anyway. There are also some RTS games coming out soon (Halo Wars, Starcraft 2), but no big shockers anywhere.

My guess is they're all holding out on the good stuff until next year. Mashahiro Sakurai said that Smash Bros. DS wasn't out of the question, Nintendo has confirmed another Legend of Zelda for Wii later on, Megaman 9 releases for all systems this September (not really waiting on Capcom's part but exciting nonetheless)... I could go on. Either way, Wii appeals to the casual side of things (why they're doing so well) and 360 and PS3 both pump out a ton of FPS games all the time, so this isn't much stray from the norm. I think I'll be occupied with SSBB and my older systems until next year anyway.

Yeah, I'm definitely not buy a PS3 until I start seeing some quality games on the shelf. I went to the store a few weeks ago, and for the first time I actually started seeing some games on the shelf. At least Microsoft was smart and got a bunch of games on the shelf at first, and then worried about creating some quality games.

I think the main reason why the 360 is doing well, is because of the Halo franchise. Though, it would be great if they could do a 4th one. Plus, you can play most Xbox games on the 360.

I think every system tried to show its big guns last year and didn't have much left for this year. (Even though I think last year's also sucked due to the lame switch to a more media-friendly style... It just makes it so much more boring even if it can be televised.) Not to mention some of the big publishers dropped out of E3 at the last moment (EA and Activision I think, don't quote me on it).

BTW the next-gen gamers clan is pretty empty... this sounds like a worthy conversation that could fill it up a bit... you guys could talk to Minister Masket if interested. :)

Final Fantasy no longer being PS exclusive is awesome. Now I don't have to buy a PS3. Unless the FF7 re-make is only on PS3...

Final Fantasy started on the Nintendo Gameboy as far as I am concerned, it was called Mystic Quest at the time.

Seeing as this is the thread of bad news, here's some more.
There is no plan to re-make FF7.

There was a tech demo, nothing more.

Yeah, I saw that. This just reinforces my view that developers are wonderful little elves running around creating magic, while publishers are the evil Santa Claus, saying they can only be happy at christmas.

Although apparently Bungie are working on new Halo, link though whether that's the pulled announcement or not I dunno. I reckon it probably is though.

I'd be pretty stoked about that. I'm already a quivering fanboy waiting on HW...

I'm somewhat interested with Halo Wars myself, but the news on a new Halo game honestly has me more excited.

I think that even that was pretty predictable. Still though, even though I'm not big on FPS games, Halo is one I'll play, and this is probably the coolest announcement all week.

I bet Sony has some tricks up it's sleeve (GamePro helps :D) There are good games on all the consoles, it looks like, If I was going to buy 1, I think it would be PS3, just because I'm more used to the controls, but the price is high, so I'd have to save up.

I'll just wait until a PS3 emulator is available. Saves a lot of money, although downloading a Bluray .iso image might take some time...

There is ONE thing you must know from E3.

ROCK BAND 2...the beginning of the end for the Guitar Hero franchise. (Which is soon to be a guitar game with crappy drums. Huh?)

Check out the new premium RB2 drum set:

Yup...I am officially addicted to this game.

Premium rock band 2 drum set at $300 is a bit much for me I'm afraid. Think I'll probably pick up GH World Tour for the drums and then get RB2 afterwards. I'm assuming everything is compatible... RB2 certainly has the sweeter tracklist though, sonic youth, dinosaur jr, smashing pumpkins, nirvana, talking heads, Bob Dylan, awesome...
