Thai youth imitates Grand Theft Auto in cab murder

Postby brooksieb on Mon Aug 04, 2008 11:34 am

A Thai teenager has confessed to robbing and murdering a taxi driver after trying to imitate scenes from the controversial "Grand Theft Auto" video game, police said on Monday. The 18-year-old high school student, now in custody pending further investigations and a trial, faces death by lethal injection if found guilty of robbing and killing a 54-year-old taxi driver with a knife at the weekend.

Police said the youth, an obsessive player of the video game, showed no sign of mental problems during questioning and had confessed to committing the crime explicitly because of the game.

"He said he wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game," chief investigator Veeravit Pipattanasak told Reuters.

The youth, described by his parents as polite and diligent, was arrested late on Saturday after he was found trying to steer a cab backwards out of a Bangkok street with the severely wounded driver in the back seat, newspapers reported.

The suspect told police he did not mean to kill the driver, whom he had chosen as a possible victim because of his age, but that he stabbed him to death when he fought back, newspapers reported.

"Grand Theft Auto", now available in its fourth edition, has been criticised for depicting violence including beatings, carjackings, drive-by shootings, drunk driving and prostitution.

A senior official at Thailand's Culture Ministry said the murder was a wake-up call for authorities to tackle the issue of violent video games, and urged parents to pay closer attention to what their children played.

"This time-bomb has already exploded and the situation could get worse," Ladda Thangsupachai, director of the ministry's Cultural Surveillance Centre, told Reuters. "Today it is a cab driver, but tomorrow it could be a video game shop owner."

The ministry has been pushing for tougher regulation of video games such as Grand Theft Auto, including the imposition of a rating system on sales and restriction on hours that youngsters can play the games in public arcades.

A multi-million dollar lawsuit was filed in Alabama against the makers and marketers of Grand Theft Auto in 2005, claiming that months of playing the game led a teenager to kill two police officers and a 911 dispatcher.

The blockbuster Grand Theft Auto games are published by Nasdaq-listed Take-Two Interactive Software.

My Response: If he dies justice is served, tough luck kid, wanna' commit the crimes....expect to get the punishment....no hard feelings....

As Dimitri says from GTA IV "you can play the game, but you can't change the rules" .

Naww, we had a conversion in a similar thread about this.

I can actually believe it, I have sometimes been so stoned out of my nuts driving down motorways I have felt almost tempted to ram other cars, simply from an overdose from GF AUTO.

I am also a completely balanced normal person, hence

When I play CC, I do not feel the urge to get my mates in London to invade Alaska

Nor do we reinforce France, Why Do that?? There are more people in France than the UK!

I do not generally kill Kings and Bishops straight after Chess either
I am normal dudes

I also do not go out and buy 4 Train stations after playing monopoly
Because I am Balanced

Someone did some good research.
"How many of these games have there been, John?"
"I don't know but there is a four on this one," answers John.
"Good enough for me," says the mindless reporter.
Make a little birdhouse in your soul.

Haha, quite, this would be the 6th edition, correct?

Also, the whole "GTA made me do it" thing is ridiculous. The lunatic kid was the one that can't tell the difference between video games and reality, and pretty much anything violent could have sent the kid over the edge.

This kid should have taken a cue from crime movies too, and killed himself before he could get caught. What a load of bullshit retards like that bring down on us innocent gamers. If I become a serial killer, I sure won't blame video games for it. I have more respect than that. Besides, I won't have a BFG 9000 to enact my dreams of DOOM II, anyway.

When I play darts, i do not launch nukes at a target

When I play D&D, I do not cure your light wounds

When I play with Multi's, there are more than one of me

SO why? When I play with Prowler, do I get Lambs?
